Child was groomed by 23-year-old man who falsely claimed to be a teenager

A harmless competition between friends turned into a nightmare when an 11-year-old Australian girl was sexually abused after adding strangers to her Snapchat account as part of a challenge with her best friend, The Guardian reports.

The child, referred to by the pseudonym “April” in the report, was attempting to increase her “Snap score” to 100,000 points when she connected with 23-year-old Jai Clapp through the platform’s “Quick Add” feature. Clapp misrepresented himself as a 17-year-old before sexually abusing the girl on three separate occasions at a local park in her hometown.

Social media challenge led to dangerous connection

According to details revealed in a Victorian County Court sentencing document accessed by The Guardian, April and her friend were competing to reach a high “Snap score” in 2023. The score, which indicates user activity on Snapchat, increases when users send and receive photos or videos (called “snaps”) and add more people to their friend lists.

To boost her score, April used Snapchat’s “Quick Add” feature, which algorithmically suggests potential connections. After accepting Clapp as a contact, the man began a calculated grooming process that lasted just 12 days before escalating to in-person abuse.

Criminal receives substantial prison sentence

Court documents show that Clapp was convicted of multiple offenses involving April, including “digital” and “penile penetration.” The 23-year-old pleaded guilty to these charges as well as to the abuse of another girl.

He received a sentence of eight years and ten months in prison, with a non-parole period of four years and eight months.

Australia is implementing strict social media age restrictions

This disturbing case emerges as Australia prepares to enforce landmark legislation banning children under 16 from using social media platforms—establishing the world’s strictest regulations of this kind, according to the Associated Press.

Under the new law, platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Reddit, and X (formerly Twitter) will be held accountable for systematic failures to prevent underage users from accessing their services.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has stated that the legislation aims to protect children from the “harms” of social media, addressing concerns widely shared among parent advocacy groups across the country.

The case highlights the potential dangers children face on social media platforms and underscores the challenges parents and authorities confront in protecting young users from predators who exploit these technologies for harmful purposes.
