60 years later, Trump orders reopening of Alcatraz prison

President directs expansion of historic facility to house “most ruthless and violent offenders”

President Donald Trump announced Sunday a directive to reopen and significantly expand Alcatraz, the infamous former federal penitentiary on an island in San Francisco Bay that has been closed for more than six decades.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump explained his rationale for reviving the notorious prison that once housed some of America’s most dangerous criminals.

“For too long, America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat Criminal Offenders, the dregs of society, who will never contribute anything other than Misery and Suffering. When we were a more serious Nation, in times past, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals, and keep them far away from anyone they could harm. That’s the way it’s supposed to be,” Trump wrote.

“That is why, today,” he continued, “I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ, to house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders.”

Significant challenges to implementation

The proposal to revitalize the long-shuttered facility represents the latest move in Trump’s campaign to transform federal incarceration and immigration detention practices. However, experts note that such an undertaking would face considerable obstacles.

Alcatraz was decommissioned in 1963 due to deteriorating infrastructure and prohibitive operational costs, as all supplies had to be transported to the island by boat. Modernizing the facility would require extensive financial investment at a time when the Bureau of Prisons has been closing facilities with similar structural issues.

A storied history in American corrections

Known as “The Rock,” Alcatraz gained notoriety for housing infamous criminals including Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly. The prison’s reputation for being escape-proof due to surrounding cold waters and strong currents made it a powerful symbol in American culture and the subject of numerous films.

Despite its formidable security, during its 29 years of operation, 36 inmates attempted 14 separate escapes, according to FBI records. Almost all were either recaptured or did not survive their attempts.

From prison to national landmark

Since its closure, Alcatraz Island has been transformed into a major tourist destination operated by the National Park Service and designated as a National Historic Landmark.

Speaking to reporters Sunday night after returning from Florida, Trump described Alcatraz as a “symbol of law and order. You know, it’s got quite a history.” He indicated the idea stemmed from his frustrations with “radicalized judges” who have insisted on due process for deportation cases.

Political and logistical questions remain

A Bureau of Prisons spokesperson stated that the agency “will comply with all Presidential Orders” but did not address specific questions about the feasibility of the plan or how it would affect the National Park Service’s current management of the island.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, whose California district includes Alcatraz Island, questioned the practicality of the proposal. “It is now a very popular national park and major tourist attraction. The President’s proposal is not a serious one,” she wrote on X.

Part of broader incarceration agenda

The Alcatraz directive follows other controversial detention proposals from the Trump administration, including plans to send certain accused gang members to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador without due process, and establishing a detention center at Guantanamo Bay to hold up to 30,000 individuals Trump has described as the “worst criminal aliens.”

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Prisons continues to navigate significant internal challenges, including staffing shortages, facility closures, and ongoing reforms following investigations that exposed systemic problems throughout the federal prison system.
