Kenyan Cult Leader Paul Mackenzie Accused of Starving 400 Followers in ‘End Times’ Ritual
Who Is Paul Mackenzie?
Paul Mackenzie is a self-proclaimed Kenyan pastor and the founder of Good News International, an evangelical church that operated for nearly two decades before being linked to one of the deadliest cult tragedies in modern history.
- Former Taxi Driver Turned Preacher: Mackenzie transitioned from driving taxis to leading a religious movement.
- Extremist Teachings: His sermons warned of an imminent apocalypse, urging followers to abandon worldly needs.
- Mass Fatalities: Over 400 bodies—including children—have been exhumed near his church’s forest compound in Malindi, Kenya.
What Happened in the Shakahola Forest?
In April 2023, Kenyan police uncovered a horrific scene in the Shakahola forest, where mass graves held the remains of Mackenzie’s followers.
- Starvation & Suffocation: Victims were allegedly instructed to starve themselves to “meet Jesus.”
- Phased Death Plan: Reports suggest Mackenzie ordered children to die first, followed by women, then men.
- Arrest & Bail: Mackenzie was briefly detained but released, after which deaths reportedly accelerated.
How Did Mackenzie Control His Followers?
Mackenzie’s influence stemmed from isolation, fear, and apocalyptic messaging:
- End Times Prophecies – Claimed the world would end in August 2023, later changing it to April 15.
- Anti-Education Rhetoric – Called schools “Satanic,” discouraging followers from sending children.
- Media Outreach – Spread teachings via YouTube and TV under his show End Time Messages.
- Forced Seclusion – Moved operations deep into Shakahola forest to evade authorities.
Why Did Authorities Fail to Stop Him Sooner?
Despite multiple red flags, Mackenzie’s cult operated unchecked for years:
- 2017 & 2019: Authorities shut down his church for keeping children out of school.
- 2023 Tip-Off: A relative’s report led to the discovery of starved children, prompting Mackenzie’s arrest.
- Government Criticism: Kenyan President William Ruto faced backlash for delayed action, with some alleging his wife’s evangelical ties influenced the response.
What’s Next for the Investigation?
- Judicial Inquiry: A commission is investigating how the cult evaded detection.
- Mass Exhumations: Forensic teams continue uncovering bodies in Shakahola.
- Legal Consequences: Mackenzie remains in custody, awaiting trial for mass murder.
