Sushila Karki Becomes Nepal’s First Woman Prime Minister Amid Political Turmoil

Nepal has turned a historic page. On Friday night, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki took the oath of office as the country’s first-ever woman prime minister, marking a dramatic shift in leadership following days of deadly unrest. The appointment comes at a moment of deep political instability, with protesters demanding change after decades of frustration with corruption and economic stagnation.

Who is Sushila Karki?

At 73, Sushila Karki is no stranger to breaking barriers. She previously served as Nepal’s first and only female chief justice, earning widespread respect for her integrity, independence, and tough stance against corruption.

Her reputation as a principled figure made her the preferred choice of Nepal’s Gen Z protesters, who saw her as an outsider capable of restoring public trust. Unlike career politicians, Karki is widely perceived as a neutral figure who can guide the country through a turbulent transition.

How did she become prime minister?

Karki’s appointment follows the resignation of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli earlier this week. Oli stepped down after mass protests erupted against his government, leaving more than 51 people dead in the worst political violence Nepal has seen in decades.

  • The protests were led largely by young Nepalis, frustrated by high unemployment and years of political dysfunction.
  • Protest leaders held marathon negotiations with President Ram Chandra Paudel and Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel, demanding a new interim leadership.
  • Their demands were met: the dissolution of Parliament and the appointment of Karki as head of an interim government tasked with overseeing new elections.

What happens next?

Fresh elections on the horizon

In her very first Cabinet meeting, Karki proposed that general elections be held on March 4, 2026. This timeline gives her interim administration just six months to restore order and prepare for a credible national vote.

Emergency measures under consideration

The new Cabinet may also recommend imposing a state of emergency across Nepal to stabilize the situation. If approved by President Paudel, emergency powers would allow the government to quickly deploy resources and security forces, though it may also raise concerns about civil liberties.

Why does this matter for Nepal?

A historic milestone for women in leadership

For the first time in its history, Nepal has a woman at the helm of government. This follows earlier milestones such as Bidya Devi Bhandari becoming the country’s first female president in 2015. Karki’s elevation continues Nepal’s slow but steady progress toward gender inclusivity in politics.

A generational shift in politics

Karki’s rise is less about party loyalty and more about youth-driven demands for change. Many of the protesters backing her were in their 20s — part of a generation disillusioned by corruption and limited economic opportunities. This generational push reflects wider frustrations across South Asia, where millions of young people face similar struggles.

A test for stability

Since the monarchy’s abolition in 2008, Nepal has cycled through a dozen prime ministers. Political instability has hindered economic growth and pushed many Nepalis to seek jobs abroad, particularly in the Middle East, South Korea, and Malaysia. Karki’s appointment is seen as a last-ditch attempt to restore stability before the next elections.

The challenges ahead

Sushila Karki steps into office with enormous expectations and equally daunting challenges:

  • Restoring trust: Winning over a public deeply skeptical of politics.
  • Economic revival: Addressing unemployment and reducing dependence on remittances from overseas workers.
  • Managing unrest: Balancing emergency powers with democratic freedoms.
  • Organizing elections: Ensuring the March 2026 vote is free, fair, and peaceful.

The bigger picture

Nepal’s experiment with appointing a non-political figure as interim leader is being closely watched across the region. If Karki succeeds in stabilizing the country and paving the way for credible elections, it may set a precedent for other democracies grappling with political gridlock.

But if her government falters, Nepal risks sliding back into a cycle of instability that has haunted the country for more than a decade.

TL;DR

  • Sushila Karki, former Chief Justice, sworn in as Nepal’s first woman prime minister.
  • Appointed as interim leader after protests forced the resignation of KP Sharma Oli.
  • Her government will oversee general elections on March 4, 2026.
  • May impose a state of emergency to stabilize unrest.
  • Seen as a youth-backed leader with a reputation for honesty and independence.
