Breezy Explainer: Who are the 'Ndrangheta? Italian Mafia with over 200 members sentenced 2,200 years in jail

An Italian court has awarded verdicts and sentences to over 200 defendants in what is being touted as Italy’s largest mafia trial in three decades, marking a significant blow against the feared ‘Ndrangheta.

After three years in a high-security courtroom in Calabria, expressly created to accommodate the huge network affiliated with the powerful organized crime organization, this “maxi trial” was completed.

But first, who are the members of the ‘Ndrangheta?

The ‘Ndrangheta’, based in the southern area of Calabria, has developed a virtual monopoly on the European cocaine trade, spreading its influence abroad.

Its roots can be traced back to the country’s unification in 1861, in the impoverished rural district of Calabria on the southern coast of Italy.

The word ‘Ndrangheta, borrowed from Greek, connotes courage, and its elite members are subjected to official initiation rites. Initially thought to be primarily a rural problem, it received public attention in the 1980s and 1990s as a result of a series of kidnappings across Italy.

While typically overshadowed by the more prominent Costa Nostra, ‘Ndrangheta affiliates achieved prominence in 1973 for the kidnapping of US-born oil billionaire John Paul Getty’s grandson, a crime that involved the severing of the victim’s ear to facilitate a ransom.

Notably, it wasn’t until 2010 that Italy formally designated the ‘Ndrangheta as a mafia organization under Italian law.

The magnitude of the maxi trial’

The judgments bring to a close a trial of unparalleled scope. The courtroom in Lamezia Terme was designed to accommodate up to 350 defendants, 400 lawyers, and 900 witnesses.

More than 100 people were acquitted, but the sheer number of convictions marks this as a watershed moment in the legal battle against a gang that has long enjoyed a near-monopoly on the European cocaine trade.

A thorough examination of the trial’s origins

The origins of this mega-trial can be traced back to a comprehensive inquiry begun in 2016 that included at least 11 Italian regions.

This endeavor culminated in December 2019, when over 2,500 officers conducted raids on suspects in Vibo Valentia, Calabria—the heart of the ‘Ndrangheta’s Mancuso clan.

Arrests made outside of Italy

This operation extended beyond the borders of Italy, resulting in arrests in Germany, Switzerland, and Bulgaria. Giancarlo Pittelli, a former Forza Italia MP, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for assisting a mafia clan.

Nicola Gratteri, the anti-mafia prosecutor who oversaw the investigation, is in the vanguard of this judicial battle. His team’s efforts included gathering 24,000 wiretaps and intercepting conversations, which served as the foundation for the allegations presented against the defendants.

‘Ndrangheta’s strategies

The trial provided a disturbing peek into the ‘Ndrangheta’s merciless tactics. The evidence presented demonstrated a pattern of violent attacks, extortion, corruption in public contracts, weapon stockpiling, manipulation of elections, and bribery.

The ‘Ndrangheta’s control of local communities became brutally obvious, exposing how deeply the organization had buried itself in various parts of society.

The inclusion of non-mafia members among the accused marked a significant change from usual mafia trials. This was a significant shift in approach, as it targeted not just the criminal organization’s foot troops but also high-ranking police officials, mayors, public servants, and entrepreneurs.

The trial’s goal was to uncover the network of collaborators that allowed the ‘Ndrangheta’s illicit actions to take place.

Following the sentencing, the majority of those convicted stated their desire to appeal.

Involved in local life

The criminal organization, characterized by colorful titles such as “The Wolf” and “Sweetie,” has become firmly ingrained in the Vibo Valentia economy.

Witnesses revealed the ‘Ndrangheta’s influence, instilling dread in business owners and farmers while enjoying the protection of white-collar professionals and politicians.

The trial revealed chilling facts such as guns stashed in cemetery chapels, cocaine delivered in ambulances, and the illicit diversion of municipal water sources.

The ‘Ndrangheta, formerly reviled by rival Italian mafias, has risen to become the most powerful criminal organization in Italy and one of the wealthiest in the world.

According to studies, its financial prowess exceeds that of Deutsche Bank and McDonald’s combined, with a $53 billion yearly turnover. The organization’s success stems from its deep roots in Calabria, where managers rarely leave their isolated villages, retaining control over multimillion-dollar global businesses.

The trial of the ‘Ndrangheta in Italy is a watershed moment in the ongoing struggle against organized crime.
