Three Chinese taikonauts stranded as Tiangong faces return capsule crisis

China is facing an unusual and potentially dangerous situation aboard its Tiangong space station: three taikonauts from the Shenzhou-21 mission are currently stranded in orbit after their designated return capsule was used by the previous crew.

The incident, triggered by space debris damage, has exposed vulnerabilities in China’s crew rotation system and raised fresh concerns about emergency preparedness in low Earth orbit.

What happened to the Shenzhou-21 crew

The Shenzhou-21 crew, Zhang Lu, Wu Fei, and Zhang Hongzhang, arrived aboard Tiangong on October 31 for a planned six-month mission. Their return vehicle was expected to remain docked as an emergency lifeboat at all times.

That plan collapsed when the Shenzhou-20 crew encountered a critical safety threat.

How the Shenzhou-20 capsule was damaged

The Shenzhou-20 return craft, originally scheduled to bring its crew home on November 5, was reportedly struck by a piece of space debris.

The impact caused a crack in the spacecraft’s viewing port, making reentry too risky. Engineers determined the capsule could not safely survive the extreme heat and aerodynamic forces experienced during descent.

With their spacecraft compromised, the Shenzhou-20 crew remained onboard Tiangong until the China National Space Administration redirected the Shenzhou-21 return vehicle for their use.

They returned to Earth on November 14, leaving the incoming crew without a return option.

Why Tiangong currently has no return capsule

A docked return capsule is essential for any crewed mission, serving as both a reentry craft and an emergency escape system. Without one, astronauts have no rapid evacuation method in the event of:

  • Depressurisation
  • Collision with space debris
  • Life-support failure

Tiangong now has no such vehicle attached, an extremely rare situation for a modern space station.

The incident has also fueled speculation regarding whether Tiangong can safely support six astronauts simultaneously, though Chinese officials have dismissed these concerns.

When China plans to send a replacement capsule

Space News reported that the China Manned Space Agency plans to launch an empty replacement return craft, the Shenzhou-22 capsule, on November 24.

If confirmed, this capsule would:

  • Dock with Tiangong
  • Serve as the Shenzhou-21 emergency return vehicle
  • Restore standard safety protocols

However, Chinese authorities have not officially confirmed the launch date, leaving mission planners and analysts waiting for updates.

The safety risks facing the stranded crew

The absence of a return capsule introduces new risks for the Shenzhou-21 crew.

No emergency evacuation route

If an emergency occurs, there is currently no spacecraft available for immediate evacuation from orbit.

High debris activity

The same orbital debris environment that damaged Shenzhou-20 continues to pose a threat. Even a small piece of debris can cause mission-ending damage at orbital speeds.

Extended mission duration

The three taikonauts may be forced to extend their stay until the replacement vehicle arrives, is checked, and deemed safe for reentry.

Space station limitations

While the Chinese space agency asserts that Tiangong can support six astronauts, the decision to send the Shenzhou-20 crew home without a backup spacecraft on site has revived debate about resource capacity and redundancy in China’s space program.

What will happen to the damaged Shenzhou-20 capsule

Once Shenzhou-22 reaches the space station, the damaged Shenzhou-20 capsule will likely be detached and guided into a controlled deorbit over the Pacific Ocean.

Engineers will continue evaluating the debris impact to better understand what caused the structural failure and how similar risks can be minimized in future missions.

China is positioning Tiangong as the successor to the International Space Station once the ISS retires. The Shenzhou-21 situation highlights important issues that could shape China’s space strategy.
