Lufthansa CEO’s Wife Faces Probe in Italy Fatal Car Crash

A tragic accident in the upscale Italian coastal town of Porto Cervo has drawn international attention after Vivian Alexandra Spohr, the 51-year-old wife of Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr, struck and killed a 24-year-old woman at a pedestrian crossing.

The victim, Gaia Costa, was a local babysitter described by Porto Cervo’s mayor as a “hard-working and cheerful” young woman deeply involved in the community. Witnesses reported that Costa attempted to alert Spohr’s approaching SUV before being hit. Authorities say Spohr continued driving until bystanders intervened.

Emergency responders attempted to revive Costa for 20 minutes, but she succumbed to severe head injuries. Spohr reportedly fainted from shock at the scene.

Why Is This Case Under Investigation?

Italian prosecutors have opened an involuntary manslaughter (vehicular homicide) investigation. Key factors being examined include:

  • Distracted Driving: Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and phone records to determine if Spohr was using her phone at the time.
  • Sobriety Tests: Spohr was tested for drugs and alcohol at the scene—both came back negative.
  • Legal Implications: If negligence is proven beyond simple error, charges could escalate.

Under Italian law, Spohr is not required to remain in the country during the investigation. She has since returned to Berlin but remains available to Italian authorities.

How Has Spohr Responded?

Through her lawyer, Angelo Merlini, Spohr expressed “dismay and deep regret” over the incident. The Spohr family has also extended condolences to Costa’s loved ones.

However, the case raises questions about accountability, especially given Spohr’s high-profile status. Legal experts suggest that if evidence points to recklessness—such as texting while driving—the penalties could be severe, even if the act was unintentional.

Who Was Gaia Costa?

Friends and officials remember Costa as a vibrant and caring individual. Porto Cervo Mayor Gianni Addis described her as deeply engaged in local culture and social causes. Her death has left the tight-knit community in mourning.

What Comes Next?

The investigation will hinge on forensic evidence, witness statements, and potential negligence findings. If charged, Spohr could face extradition proceedings or a trial in absentia.
