Syringe Attacks at France’s Music Festival: All You Need To Know

France’s annual Fête de la Musique, a beloved street festival celebrating live music, took a disturbing turn this year. Dozens of attendees reported being pricked by syringes in crowded public spaces, sparking a nationwide investigation and leading to multiple arrests.

Here’s what we know so far about the “syringe attacks”—who was targeted, whether drugs were involved, and how authorities are responding.

What Happened During the Fête de la Musique?

On June 21, 2025, millions of people flooded the streets of France for the annual music festival, which features free concerts and performances in cities across the country. But amid the celebrations, 145 people reported being pricked or stabbed with syringes in crowded areas.

  • Paris saw at least 13 cases, including a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man who felt unwell after being attacked.
  • In Angoulême, a city in southwestern France, around 50 people were reportedly targeted.
  • Authorities have detained 12 suspects so far, with investigations ongoing.

While no serious injuries have been linked to the syringe attacks, the incidents have raised fears of possible drugging or poisoning.

Were Drugs Involved in Syringe Attacks?

At this stage, officials haven’t confirmed whether the syringes contained any substances. However, concerns have been raised about date-rape drugs like GHB or Rohypnol, which are sometimes used to incapacitate victims.

  • Some victims were hospitalized for toxicology tests, but results have not yet been made public.
  • Ahead of the festival, social media posts reportedly circulated calling for women to be targeted, suggesting some attacks may have been premeditated.

French authorities are treating the cases seriously, with the Interior Ministry closely monitoring developments.

Who Was Arrested?

Police have taken 12 people into custody in connection with the syringe attacks.

  • Four suspects in Angoulême are believed to have targeted around 50 victims.
  • Nationwide, more than 370 people were arrested during the festival for various offenses, including nearly 90 in Paris alone.

While the exact motives remain unclear, the arrests suggest a coordinated effort to investigate the attacks.

Were There Other Serious Incidents?

Outside of the syringe-related cases, 14 people were seriously injured during the festival—including a 17-year-old who was hospitalized with stab wounds to the abdomen.

  • Thirteen police officers were also injured in crowd control incidents.
  • Despite the alarming reports, Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez stated that “no major incident” disrupted the overall event.

Why Are These Attacks So Concerning?

The Fête de la Musique is typically a night of celebration, making the sudden rise in syringe attacks particularly unsettling.

  • Similar incidents have occurred in France before—in 2021, dozens of women reported being pricked with needles in nightclubs, sparking fears of spiked injections.
  • The lack of immediate toxicology results leaves victims uncertain about potential health risks.
  • The attacks could deter public participation in future festivals if safety concerns aren’t addressed.

What’s Next?

French authorities are urging victims to come forward and file police reports to aid the investigation.

  • Medical professionals recommend that anyone who was pricked seek immediate testing for potential drug exposure.
  • Officials may increase security measures at future large-scale events to prevent similar incidents.

For now, the motive behind the attacks remains unclear—whether they were random acts, coordinated assaults, or attempts at drugging victims.
