From oath to galas: What to expect on Trump’s inauguration day

In an unprecedented shift that perfectly encapsulates the Trump era, tomorrow’s presidential inauguration will feature an extraordinary mix of tech billionaires and country music stars, all gathered within the intimate confines of the Capitol Rotunda after a last-minute weather-driven relocation.

Ceremony goes indoors, drastically reducing crowd size

In a development that challenges Trump’s usual preference for large crowds, Friday’s announcement of the venue change has dramatically altered the inauguration’s scope. The shift from the traditional West Lawn setting to the Capitol Rotunda reduces capacity from over 220,000 to approximately 600 attendees. To accommodate disappointed ticket holders, Trump has arranged for a live broadcast at Capital One Arena, promising to make an appearance at the 20,000-seat venue.

Silicon Valley’s unprecedented presence

In what observers call a “particularly Trumpian twist,” the guest list features an unprecedented gathering of tech industry leaders:

  • Elon Musk, X (formerly Twitter) owner
  • Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder
  • Mark Zuckerberg, Meta CEO
  • Shou Chew, TikTok CEO

Political heavyweights converge

The ceremony will mark a rare gathering of political figures across the spectrum:

  • Outgoing President Joe Biden
  • Former Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama
  • Former rivals Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris
  • International leaders including Italy’s Giorgia Meloni
  • Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, representing Xi Jinping

Notably absent will be former First Lady Michelle Obama, while other former First Ladies will attend.

Constitutional traditions meet modern politics

Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the oath to Trump for the second time, with JD Vance being sworn in as Vice President. The ceremony will follow its constitutionally mandated noon timing, though in a markedly different setting than Trump’s 2017 inauguration, which featured his memorable “American carnage” address.

Ambitious day-one agenda

“Within hours of taking office, I will sign dozens of executive orders, close to 100 to be exact, many of which I will be describing in my address tomorrow,” Trump declared at Sunday’s candlelight dinner. Key initiatives include:

  • Mass deportation program launch
  • Expanded oil drilling
  • Potential January 6 riot-related pardons
  • Immediate “Quad” meeting with Japan, India, and Australia representatives

The entertainment lineup shows stronger star power

Unlike 2017’s celebrity-light affair, this inauguration boasts significant entertainment power:

  • Carrie Underwood performing “America the Beautiful”
  • Lee Greenwood with his rally standard “God Bless the USA”
  • Evening galas featuring Jason Aldean, Rascal Flatts, and Gavin DeGraw
  • The Village People, fresh from a pre-inauguration performance where Trump joined them for “Y.M.C.A.”

Analysis: Breaking with tradition

This inauguration represents a significant departure from historical norms, combining traditional ceremonial elements with Trump’s characteristic blend of populist entertainment and tech-world influence. The indoor venue, while necessary due to weather, creates an unusually intimate setting for what is typically a mass public event.

As Washington prepares for tomorrow’s ceremonies, the convergence of Silicon Valley power players, international leaders, and country music stars signals a uniquely Trump-style beginning to his second term, even as it maintains the constitutional foundations of the peaceful transfer of power.
