Is Gen Z the Smartest? How Their IQ Compares to Other Generations

Quick Summary

Studies show Generation Z (born mid‑1990s to 2010s) has an average IQ around 101, slightly higher than Millennials (~99) and lower than Gen X (~103). The long-standing Flynn Effect, IQ rising roughly 3 points per decade, has shown signs of plateauing or decline in many countries, called the reverse Flynn Effect. But IQ captures only one form of intelligence. Gen Z leads in digital fluency, information processing, and social-emotional adaptability.

What Is Gen Z’s Average IQ and How Do We Know?

A U.S. adolescent study using the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test with norms from 1988–1989 and 2001–2004 found no significant Flynn Effect for fluid IQ, suggesting modern Gen Z scores are stable or slightly lower than previous cohorts.

Meta-analyses across 299,000 participants from 72 countries show IQ gains of ~2.2 points per decade, especially strong for those aged 13–19—i.e., the Gen Z age group.

Most sources estimate Gen Z’s mean IQ to be around 101, compared with 99.2 for Millennials and 103 for Gen X.

What Was the Flynn Effect, and Why Is It Slowing Now?

The Flynn Effect, identified by James Flynn in the 1980s, documented rising IQ scores, about 3 points per decade in the U.S., from 1932 to the 1990s.

Contributing factors: better education, improved nutrition, reduced lead exposure, and more cognitively demanding environments (technology, education, complexity of modern life).

But since the 1990s, many industrialized nations, including the U.S., UK, Norway, and Denmark, have shown IQ declines of 2–4 points in verbal, matrix, and computational reasoning. Spatial IQ remains stable or improving.

Average IQ: How Gen Z Compares to Other Generations

GenerationApprox. Avg IQTrend vs Previous
Baby Boomers~98Baseline
Gen X~103+5 IQ points
Millennials~99.2Slight decline compared to Gen X
Gen Z~101+1.8 over Millennials

These figures reflect modest gains consistent with the slowed Flynn Effect. Stability in teenage IQ but variability among adult norms appears notable.

What Is Driving the Reverse Flynn Effect?

Several environmental and social shifts may explain plateauing Gen Z IQ scores:

  1. Educational Quality: Some countries show diminishing returns in school quality, despite years of schooling remaining constant.
  2. Test-taking Behavior: Younger users may perform worse on structured IQ tests due to unfamiliarity or reduced reading-based cognition.
  3. Diet and Pollution: Poor nutrition, additives, and air pollution are associated with cognitive declines.
  4. Digital Distraction: Excess social media and screens may impact deep attention and critical reading skills.

IQ Is Only One Dimension—Gen Z Strengths Go Further

IQ focuses on structured reasoning, but Gen Z excels in other intelligence domains:

  • Digital Literacy: Gen Z processes information and multitasks across platforms faster than any generation before.
  • Social-Emotional Intelligence: High awareness of diversity, mental health, and emotional nuance—critical for modern workplaces.
  • Adaptability: Exposure to global crises, remote learning, and tech shifts has enhanced resilience and creative problem-solving.

Why Generation IQ Differences Matter

Education & Policy:

  • If younger cohorts plateau, policymakers may need to bolster cognitive stimulation via improved schooling, nutrition, and reduced environmental toxins.

Workplace Trends:

  • Employers should value diverse forms of intelligence—digital, emotional, collaborative—not just raw IQ scores.

Social Implications:

  • Gen Z’s strengths in global awareness and social cooperation may offset minor IQ differences—and shape how intelligence is defined in the 21st century.

Final Thoughts: Gen Z IQ in Context

  • Gen Z likely averages 101 IQ, just above Millennials (~99), and slightly below Gen X (~103).⎼
  • Classic Flynn Effect gains have flattened or reversed in recent decades.
  • IQ remains meaningful but insufficient to define intelligence—Gen Z thrives in dynamic, tech-driven, socially conscious environments.
