Global Terrorism Index: Afghanistan ranks first for the fourth consecutive year

The Global Terrorism Index reveals Afghanistan to be the most impacted for the fourth consecutive year. However, terrorism-related deaths saw a 38 percent reduction from the peak in 2015. Read to know more.

All about the 10th Global Terrorism Index report

The tenth Global Terrorism Index (GTI) report released on Tuesday revealed Afghanistan as the nation most impacted by terrorism. However, there has been a 75 and 58 percent reduction in attacks and deaths respectively. Additionally, the report added that this “does not include acts of state repression and violence by state actors and, as such, acts committed by the Taliban are no longer included in the scope of the report since they took control of the government”.

According to GTI, Afghanistan recorded a total of 633 fatalities in 2022. Terrorism-related deaths saw a decline of 866. On a global scale, there was a nine percent reduction, showing a 38 percent reduction from the peak of terrorism-related deaths in 2015. Despite having a marginal decrease from last year, India ranked 13th on the GTI. While it was one of the 25 worst hits, Indian respondents did not select terrorist-related acts and war as the biggest threat to daily life and safety. On the other hand, Pakistan saw a significant 120 percent rise from last year.

More on the report

The analysis of the Global Terrorism Index report reveals a trend of the South Asian region having the worst average score. “The region recorded 1,354 deaths from terrorism in 2022, a decrease of 30 percent when compared to the previous year; however, if the improvement in Afghanistan was excluded, then terrorism deaths would have increased by 71 percent,” revealed the report.

“Afghanistan and Pakistan remain amongst the ten countries most affected by terrorism in 2022, with deaths in Pakistan rising significantly to 643, a 120 percent increase from 292 deaths in 2021. The BLA was responsible for a third of these deaths in Pakistan, a ninefold increase from the prior year, making it the fastest growing terrorist group in the world,” reads the report. “IS remained the deadliest terror group globally for the eighth consecutive year, recording the most attacks and deaths of any group in 2022. Despite this, terrorism deaths attributed to IS and its affiliate groups, Islamic State – Khorasan Province (ISK), Islamic State – Sinai Province (ISS), and Islamic State West Africa (ISWA), declined by 16 percent,” it added.
