Tesla debuts in India as Pratap Sarnaik buys first Model Y

Tesla has officially made its debut on Indian roads, marking a major milestone for the country’s electric vehicle market. The first Tesla Model Y was delivered on Friday from the company’s newly opened Tesla Experience Centre in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).

Who owns India’s first Tesla Model Y?

Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik became the first Indian to take delivery of a Tesla directly from the automaker’s showroom. The Shiv Sena leader booked the car shortly after Tesla launched its first official outlet in India this July.

At the handover ceremony, Tesla representatives showcased the SUV’s design, performance, and sustainability features. Sarnaik described the purchase as both a personal choice and a symbolic step toward supporting Maharashtra’s push for clean mobility.

He added that he plans to gift a Tesla to his grandson as part of an effort to inspire awareness about electric vehicles among younger generations.

Why this moment matters for India

Tesla’s arrival on Indian roads is more than just another luxury car launch—it signals the beginning of a new chapter in India’s electric mobility journey.

  • Maharashtra has already rolled out 5,000 e-buses through the state-run MSRTC.
  • EV buyers enjoy toll exemptions on the Atal Setu and Samruddhi Expressway.
  • With Tesla now in the mix, industry experts say India’s EV adoption could accelerate, especially among urban consumers who see the brand as a status symbol and a step toward sustainability.

Key features of the Tesla Model Y

Tesla’s first model in India, the Model Y SUV, comes in two variants:

  • Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD):
    • 60kWh battery
    • Range: up to 500 km
    • 0–100 km/h in 5.9 seconds
  • Long Range RWD:
    • Extended range up to 622 km
    • 0–100 km/h in 5.6 seconds

Both versions feature a single motor setup.

Pricing and colors

  • Model Y RWD: ₹59.89 lakh ($67,954.50, ex-showroom Delhi)
  • Model Y Long Range RWD: ₹67.89 lakh ($77,031.73, ex-showroom Delhi)

Standard color: Stealth Grey
Optional colors (extra cost):

  • Pearl White / Diamond Black: ₹95,000
  • Glacier Blue / Quicksilver: ₹1.25 lakh ($1,418.39)
  • Ultra Red: ₹1.85 lakh ($2,099.22)

What’s next for Tesla in India?

After Mumbai, Tesla has already opened a second Experience Centre in Delhi, with expansion planned in other metro cities. Analysts expect the company to eventually assemble vehicles locally to bring down costs, similar to how other global automakers entered the Indian market.

For now, India’s first Tesla rolling out on public roads has made headlines, setting the stage for a new wave of premium EV adoption—and a test of how Tesla adapts to India’s price-sensitive but rapidly growing auto sector.
