Widening spy ring emerges in wake of Pahalgam terror attack

In a sweeping crackdown following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, Indian security agencies have arrested at least eight individuals across multiple states on allegations of espionage for Pakistan. The operation, dubbed Operation Sindoor, highlights how individuals from diverse backgrounds—including students, YouTubers, and security personnel—were allegedly co-opted by Pakistani intelligence to gather and relay sensitive information.

The arrests span states including Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat, suggesting an expanding network of operatives who were reportedly lured by financial incentives or manipulated through personal and ideological means.

Pakistani intelligence targeting digital influencers, say police

Authorities in Haryana’s Hisar district emphasized a disturbing trend: the targeting of social media influencers by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

“Pakistan is using young influencers for spying,” Hisar Superintendent of Police Shashank Kumar Sawan said in a statement. “These young people go on the wrong path for easy money.”

Among those arrested are individuals ranging from a travel vlogger to a college student and a local businessman. Below is a detailed account of those detained under suspicion of espionage for Pakistan.

Jyoti Malhotra: YouTuber turned alleged spy

Jyoti Malhotra, a 33-year-old travel vlogger from Hisar, Haryana, ran a YouTube channel titled Travel with JO. She was reportedly in contact with a Pakistani official who had been expelled from India. According to police, Malhotra visited Pakistan at least twice, and several of her videos document her travels across Lahore. Authorities allege she was being developed as a potential intelligence asset by Pakistani operatives.

Davender Singh Dhillon: Student with a political science background

Davender Singh Dhillon, 25, was arrested in Haryana’s Kaithal district on May 12. A political science student at Khalsa College in Patiala, Dhillon had previously uploaded photos of pistols and rifles to Facebook. Upon questioning, he allegedly admitted to visiting Pakistan in November and sharing classified information with ISI agents, including images of Patiala’s military cantonment.

Nauman Ilahi: Security guard with secret connections

Originally from Uttar Pradesh, 24-year-old Nauman Ilahi was working as a security guard in Panipat, Haryana, when he was detained. Police claim he maintained communication with a Pakistani handler and received payments routed through his brother-in-law’s bank account. He allegedly passed on information of strategic interest to the ISI.

Arman: Youth caught during cross-border tensions

Arman, a 23-year-old from Nuh in Haryana, was arrested on May 16. Law enforcement officials said he was transmitting sensitive data to Pakistani contacts amid heightened Indo-Pak tensions.

Shahzad: Businessman with a dual role

Shahzad, a trader from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, was apprehended by the Special Task Force (STF) on May 18. He had traveled to Pakistan multiple times under the pretext of trade. Investigators allege that while importing cosmetics, spices, and garments, he was also engaged in covert activities on behalf of the ISI.

Mohammad Murtaza Ali: Tech-savvy suspect in custody

In a joint raid led by the Gujarat Police in Jalandhar, Mohammad Murtaza Ali was arrested for allegedly sharing intelligence with Pakistan using a custom-built mobile application. Authorities recovered four mobile phones and three SIM cards from him, underscoring the growing digital dimension of modern espionage.

Two others from Punjab arrested on similar charges

Two more individuals, identified as Gazala and Yamin Mohammad, were detained in Punjab. Though details remain scarce, they are believed to be linked to the broader web of espionage activities uncovered during the ongoing operation.

National implications and continued vigilance

The revelations from Operation Sindoor have raised serious concerns within India’s intelligence and law enforcement agencies. The breadth of professions, ages, and methods employed underscores the evolving tactics of foreign spy agencies in exploiting vulnerable or impressionable citizens.

Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have indicated that more arrests could follow as digital footprints and financial trails are further examined.
