Ram Temple Trust Chief Champat Rai Resigns Amid Ayodhya Donation Theft Investigation

The resignation of Ram Temple trust chief Champat Rai has added a significant new chapter to the investigation into the alleged theft of donations at the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya. Rai, along with trust member Anil Mishra, stepped down as authorities continue probing allegations that temple donations were misappropriated through a criminal conspiracy.

The development comes after police arrested eight individuals named in a First Information Report (FIR) connected to the alleged embezzlement of temple funds. While the investigation is ongoing, the resignations have intensified public scrutiny of the trust responsible for overseeing one of India’s most prominent religious institutions.

Why did Champat Rai resign?

Champat Rai resigned from his role as chief of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust while investigators continue examining allegations involving temple donations. Trust member Anil Mishra also stepped down.

The resignations follow mounting attention on the case after police detained eight accused individuals identified in the FIR. Authorities have not publicly stated that either Rai or Mishra has been accused of wrongdoing in the case, but their departure comes during a politically and legally sensitive investigation.

The Ram Temple has become one of India’s most visited religious sites since its inauguration, making transparency in its financial management a matter of national interest.

What is the Ram Temple donation theft case?

The investigation centers on allegations that donations offered at the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple were illegally diverted instead of reaching the temple’s official accounts.

Complaint filed by a trust member

The complaint was filed by trust member Krishna Mohan, who alleged that donations collected at the temple were embezzled as part of a criminal conspiracy.

Based on the complaint, police registered a case under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 306, 316(5), 317(4), 317(5), 61, and 3(5).

Investigators are now examining financial records, donation channels, and the movement of funds to determine whether any criminal misconduct occurred.

Eight accused arrested

The FIR names eight individuals:

  • Anukalp Mishra
  • Lavkush Mishra
  • Manish Yadav
  • Rajesh Pathak
  • Ramashankar Yadav (also known as Tinnu Yadav)
  • Avinash Shukla
  • Karunesh Pandey
  • Subhash Srivastava

Police have taken all eight into custody for questioning as part of the investigation.

Authorities have also indicated that additional unidentified individuals may be investigated if evidence emerges.

How did the investigation begin?

The controversy gained momentum after former Samajwadi Party MLA from Ayodhya, Pawan Pandey, alleged that between ₹7 crore and ₹7.5 crore in temple donations had been siphoned off.

Given the seriousness of the allegations and the temple’s public significance, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust requested a formal investigation.

In response, the Uttar Pradesh government established a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) on June 14.

What is the SIT investigating?

The Special Investigation Team was tasked with:

  • Examining how donations were collected.
  • Tracking the movement of temple funds.
  • Identifying any financial irregularities.
  • Determining whether a criminal conspiracy existed.
  • Recommending further legal action if necessary.

The FIR was registered after the SIT submitted its preliminary findings and recommendations.

What has the Uttar Pradesh government said?

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has criticized opposition parties over the controversy.

According to reports, the chief minister accused political opponents of attempting to derive political advantage from the investigation while emphasizing that authorities are handling the matter through established legal procedures.

The state government has not announced any conclusions regarding the alleged financial misconduct, and the investigation remains active.

Why does this case matter?

The Ram Janmabhoomi Temple occupies a unique place in India’s religious, cultural, and political landscape.

Every year, millions of devotees visit the temple and contribute donations, making financial accountability essential to maintaining public trust.

The investigation carries broader implications because it raises questions about:

  • Governance of religious trusts.
  • Financial transparency.
  • Accountability in managing public donations.
  • Oversight mechanisms for charitable institutions.

Regardless of the investigation’s outcome, the case is likely to influence discussions about how major religious organizations manage and audit donated funds.

What happens next?

Several key developments are expected in the coming weeks:

  • Police will continue questioning the eight arrested individuals.
  • Investigators will examine financial records and donation transactions.
  • The SIT may submit additional findings as the investigation progresses.
  • Authorities could file further charges if new evidence is uncovered.
  • Courts will ultimately determine any criminal liability based on the evidence presented.

At this stage, the allegations remain under investigation, and no court has determined the guilt or innocence of those involved.

The bigger picture

The resignation of Champat Rai and Anil Mishra marks a significant moment in one of the most closely watched investigations involving a major religious institution in India.

While the departures may help facilitate the ongoing inquiry, the central questions remain unanswered: whether donations were indeed misappropriated, how any alleged diversion occurred, and who, if anyone, bears legal responsibility.

Until investigators complete their work and judicial proceedings run their course, the case remains an evolving story with potentially far-reaching implications for the governance and oversight of religious trusts across India.

TL;DR

  • Ram Temple trust chief Champat Rai and trust member Anil Mishra have resigned.
  • Their resignations come amid an investigation into alleged theft of temple donations.
  • Police have arrested eight accused named in an FIR.
  • The Uttar Pradesh government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) after allegations that ₹7 crore to ₹7.5 crore in donations were siphoned off.
  • Authorities are investigating whether temple donations were diverted through a criminal conspiracy.
