Jackson Women's Health Organization: Mississippi's last abortion clinic shuts down

Mississippi state’s only abortion clinic has shut down permanently as the trigger law takes effect in the state.

Lone abortion clinic closes in US State

Jackson Women's Health Organization: Mississippi's last abortion clinic shuts down

On Wednesday, Jackson Women’s Health Organization performed the last abortion as demonstrators maintained a strict vigil outside the premises. Some pro-life agitators even stopped patients from entering the clinic in its final hours of operation.

The abortion clinic was famously known as Pink House owing to its colorful walls.

“Today is a hard day for all of us @ the last abortion provider in Mississippi,” Tweeted The Pink House Fund. The fund raised donations to keep the institution running.

“It is our last day fighting against all the odds —of being there when no other providers would or could. We are proud of the work we have done here,” they added.

The operators of the clinic said that their last hope of staying open was shot down when a special judge denied a motion for a temporary injunction to block the law from taking effect.

A spokesperson for the Center for Reproductive Rights stated that since the trigger law takes effect on Thursday, they will stop providing abortion services by midnight.

The clinic operators indicated they plan to shift their operation to New Mexico. This is because New Mexico has no major restrictions in place to access abortions.

Jackson Women’s Health Org came to light after having triggered the legal process that eventually led to the US Supreme Court’s June 24 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade

Overturning the 1973 ruling is increasing the nationwide protests against the abortion ban in the US. The lone abortion clinic also filed a lawsuit against Mississippi law restricting abortion to 15 weeks.

Mississippi law passed in 2007 carries penalties as long as 10 years in prison for violations. However, it only carries exceptions for dangers to the mother’s life but not for incest or rape.
