Jonathan Toebbe is a 43-year-old nuclear engineer working for the US Navy. He tried to pass information related to nuclear-powered warships to a foreign nation. On Monday, he pleaded guilty in a federal court in Martinsburg, West Virginia. He acknowledged that through his actions, he was causing “injury to the United States“. Toebbe had access to a top-secret security clearance. He was guilty of a single count of conspiracy that involves him sharing restricted data. His lawyers have agreed to a potential punishment of prison time between 12 to 17 years.
Both Dianna and Jonathan Toebbe speak french and had discussed their skills in the language for fleeing the US. They were making plans to go to the country they had contacted for selling classified information. However, the court did not reveal the name of the country.

In October 2021, the engineer and his wife Diana were arrested by prosecutors for trying to continually sell the submarine’s secrets. They were providing information to who the couple assumed to be representing a foreign nation. However, to their shock, it was an undercover FBI agent. His wife Diana Toebbe was accused for bring Jonathan’s lookout at prearranged dead-drop sites when he was depositing memory cards with the information. She has not pleaded guilty as of now. Hence, the case against her is still standing.
Additionally, the couple was concealing memory cards inside Chewing gum wrappers, Band-Aid wrappers, and even a peanut butter sandwich. After pleading guilty, Toebbe is willing to help the federal officials in locating the classified information he was holding. He is also willing to surrender almost $100,000 in cryptocurrency that was paid to him in exchange for the nuclear secrets.
