Galcerán

Mar Galcerán, a People’s Party (PP) member of Spain, has made history as the country’s first Down syndrome legislator.

Galcerán spent years in government service after joining the PP at the age of 18 and being lured to its tradition-friendly mentality. Her notable roles included working with the President of the Generalitat Valenciana and contributing to Asindown, a Valencian organization that helps families with Down syndrome.

Galcerán finished 20th on the People’s Party list in the critical Valencian regional election in May 2023. Despite originally being without a seat, a fortunate opportunity came as a result of the appointment of deputy Ernesto Fernández Pardo, allowing her to join the Corts Valenciennes on September 14, 2023.

Galcerán’s historic feat occurred in the Spanish regional legislature, the Corts Valenciennes, perhaps making her the first person with Down syndrome in a European regional parliament, as acknowledged by Down España.

Galcerán’s path represents a decades-long commitment to campaigning for people with intellectual disability. In 2013, Ángela Bachiller became Spain’s first city councillor and possibly the first person with Down syndrome to occupy office, setting a precedent for her. The People’s Party praised this success as a crucial step in breaking down political obstacles for people with Down syndrome.

Despite conflicting comments online, Galcerán is taking on her post with a strong feeling of duty. She wants to learn and help Valencianos, particularly those with different talents. Galcerán’s participation in the regional parliament seeks to fight conventional preconceptions by emphasizing her wish to be seen beyond her disability.

As Spain’s political landscape evolves to welcome diversity, Galcerán’s historic role reflects growth and inclusivity, contributing to a favorable shift in cultural perspectives.
