Dying words of a Ukrainian soldier highlight respect for Russian who killed him in a brutal battlefield encounter

The final moments of a Ukrainian soldier have captured global attention for their humanity amid the brutality of war. Dmytro Maslovsky, known as “Cobra,” faced off in a hand-to-hand knife fight with Russian soldier Andrey Grigoriev, aka “Tuta.” The intense encounter ended with Maslovsky’s death, but not before he expressed profound respect for his opponent.

Maslovsky, 30, from Odesa, Ukraine, was mortally wounded during the fight and, in his dying breaths, told Grigoriev, “You were the best fighter in the world. Goodbye, you were better.” His plea to “let me die in peace” was recorded on his body armor. Grigoriev later recounted the moment, saying Maslovsky said goodbye to the sky and his mother before succumbing to his injuries.

A battle of life and death

Grigoriev, a soldier from Russia’s Yakutia region, described their fight as a rare moment where modern, high-tech warfare reverted to old-fashioned combat. Both men knew only one would survive.

Despite his injuries, Maslovsky attempted to pull the pin on a grenade to end his life. The grenade’s explosion caused further wounds, prompting Grigoriev to shoot him to end his suffering. “He asked me not to touch him, to let him die. I did what I had to do,” Grigoriev said.

Respect amid brutality

Grigoriev, who lost part of his ear in the fight, expressed unexpected admiration for Maslovsky. “Since childhood, we Russians and Yakuts have been taught that in any situation, you must remain a human being,” he said. The respect between the two soldiers, even as enemies, underscores the tragic humanity often overshadowed by the violence of war.

A glimpse of humanity in war

Maslovsky’s last words and Grigoriev’s reflections provide a rare and poignant perspective on the personal toll of war. Despite their allegiances, the men’s shared humanity shone through in their final encounter.

This moment of mutual respect amidst carnage reminds the world of the individual lives and stories behind the headlines of war, even as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to claim countless others.
