Scientists Find a Never-Before-Seen Animal Living in the Great Salt Lake

Scientists studying the Great Salt Lake have identified a tiny animal never before documented by science, expanding what researchers know about life in one of North America’s harshest environments. The discovery, confirmed by biologists at the University of Utah, shows that even extreme ecosystems can still hold surprises hidden at microscopic scales.

The newly identified creature is a roundworm, or nematode, named Diplolaimelloides woaabi. It appears to live only in the Great Salt Lake and may play a subtle but important role in the lake’s fragile ecosystem. The finding also raises larger questions about evolution, survival, and how life adapts to extreme salinity.

What exactly did scientists discover in the Great Salt Lake?

Researchers identified at least one previously unknown species of nematode living inside the lake’s microbialites, the rock-like structures built by layered microbial communities on the lakebed.

Key details include:

  • The species has been named Diplolaimelloides woaabi
  • It measures less than a millimeter in length
  • Genetic evidence suggests there may be a second, closely related species
  • The worm appears to be endemic, meaning it exists nowhere else on Earth

It took nearly three years of additional genetic and taxonomic work for researchers to confirm that the organism was new to science.

Why has this animal never been seen before

Nematodes are among the most widespread animals on the planet, yet their tiny size means they often go unnoticed. Most species are shorter than a grain of rice and require microscopes and genetic tools to tell them apart.

Scientists have already identified more than 250,000 nematode species worldwide, and many more likely remain undiscovered. These organisms dominate ecosystems quietly, accounting for about 80 percent of animal life in soils and nearly 90 percent of animals living on the ocean floor.

Despite their abundance, no nematode species had been formally recorded in the Great Salt Lake until 2022.

How researchers found the worms

The discovery emerged from expeditions led by Julie Jung, then a postdoctoral researcher in biologist Michael Werner’s lab.

Researchers collected samples by kayak and bike, targeting microbialites scattered across the lakebed. Inside these microbial mats, they found living nematodes adapted to salinity levels that would be lethal to most animals.

Until then, only two animals were known to survive the lake’s hypersaline conditions: brine shrimp and brine flies. The discovery made nematodes just the third known group of animals able to live in the Great Salt Lake.

What makes Diplolaimelloides woaabi unusual

Genetic analysis placed the species within the family Monhysteridae, a group of nematodes known for tolerating extreme environments. Most members of this group live in coastal marine or brackish habitats.

The Great Salt Lake, however, sits more than 4,200 feet above sea level and around 800 miles from the nearest ocean. Only one other species in the same genus lives away from the coast, in eastern Mongolia, making the Utah find especially unusual.

How did the worms get there?

Researchers are exploring two leading explanations, both unusual.

One hypothesis suggests the worms have lived in the region for tens of millions of years. During the Cretaceous Period, Utah lay along the edge of a massive inland sea. As the land rose and climates changed, organisms that adapted to salty conditions may have remained behind, surviving repeated environmental shifts.

Another possibility is long-distance transport by migratory birds. Birds are known to carry seeds, microbes, and small invertebrates across continents. It is possible that nematodes hitched a ride on feathers or feet from distant saline lakes.

Determining which scenario is correct will require more genetic and geological research.

A strange clue from the lab

When scientists examined wild samples, they found that fewer than one percent of the nematodes were male. In laboratory cultures, however, males made up roughly half the population.

The difference suggests the lake environment itself influences reproduction in ways scientists do not yet understand. Factors such as salinity, temperature, or microbial interactions may play a role.

Why this tiny worm matters

The nematodes live in the upper layers of microbialite mats, feeding on bacteria. By doing so, they likely help regulate microbial populations and recycle nutrients within the lake.

Nematodes are also widely used as bioindicators. Changes in their abundance, diversity, or distribution can signal shifts in water quality, salinity, or sediment chemistry before larger animals are affected.

With the Great Salt Lake under increasing pressure from drought, water diversion, and climate change, this newly discovered species could become an important early warning system for ecosystem stress.

What this discovery says about the lake’s future

The fact that Diplolaimelloides woaabi appears to live only on microbialites suggests it depends on very specific conditions. If those structures degrade as the lake continues to shrink, the species could disappear before scientists fully understand its role.

The discovery highlights both how much remains unknown about the Great Salt Lake and how fragile its ecosystem may be.
