An Assamese woman finds herself at the center of a disturbing AI-driven revenge plot after her face is used to create a hypersexualized online persona
A bizarre and deeply troubling case of identity theft has emerged from Dibrugarh, Assam, where a woman discovered her face being used by a viral Instagram personality known as “Babydoll Archi.” The character, known for seductive dance videos and suggestive content, had amassed over 1.4 million followers before authorities uncovered the truth: she didn’t exist.
Viral Fame, Without Consent
The social media figure “Babydoll Archi” gained massive attention after appearing in provocative videos, most notably dancing in a red saree to a Romanian track, Dame Un Grr, and appearing in a photo alongside American adult film actress Kendra Lust. These posts sent her following skyrocketing, securing her a verified blue tick on Instagram.
But the real woman behind the face had no idea about her online presence. Archita Phukan, a married woman living in Dibrugarh, India, was shocked to learn that her identity had been appropriated for a persona she had never created. She was not even active on social media.
Identity Theft and a Revenge Motive
The situation unraveled when Phukan’s brother filed a complaint at the Dibrugarh police station after recognizing her face in the viral content. Investigations soon revealed that the person behind the account was Pratim Bora, a mechanical engineer and Phukan’s former boyfriend. Police labeled the case as an act of “revenge porn” perpetrated using advanced artificial intelligence tools.
Senior Police Officer Sizal Agarwal confirmed that Bora used AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Dzine to generate seductive content by digitally manipulating Phukan’s photos. What began in 2020 as a few altered images eventually escalated into full-fledged deepfake videos. Bora ran the Babydoll Archi account using these AI-generated visuals, leveraging AI’s evolving capabilities to make the content increasingly lifelike.
Verified Fame, Artificial Persona
Bora’s efforts paid off in virality. The account, built on a fabricated identity, even received Instagram verification. Social media buzz suggested that the woman might soon enter the U.S. adult entertainment industry—rumors completely unknown to the real Phukan.
Authorities say Bora monetized the account heavily. He had posted at least 282 times and reportedly earned around ₹10 lakh through subscriptions and paid content hosted via platforms like Linktree. The page underwent multiple name changes, the latest being “Amira Ishtara.”
Police Crackdown and Digital Evidence
On July 11, Phukan’s family presented the case to police, supported by screenshots and images from the account. Bora was arrested a day later, on July 12. Police confiscated several laptops, mobile devices, hard drives, and financial documents. According to Officer Agarwal, Bora had also created multiple Gmail accounts and social media aliases and managed at least 3,000 subscriptions across fake profiles.
“He weaponized AI to create content that not only humiliated the victim but also manipulated the audience into believing the persona was real,” Agarwal said.
Broader Implications: A Cautionary Tale in the Age of Deepfakes
The case has raised pressing concerns about the misuse of artificial intelligence and the ease with which deepfake technology can distort reality. Experts warn that as AI tools become more accessible and sophisticated, they could be exploited for criminal purposes, including identity theft, financial fraud, and digital harassment.
“Technology was created to serve humanity, not to weaponize it,” one cybersecurity expert noted. “We are reaching a point where seeing is no longer believing, and the line between real and fake is nearly indistinguishable.”
With criminals increasingly using AI to manipulate images and voices, incidents like Babydoll Archi are likely just the beginning. The case calls for urgent legal and technological safeguards to prevent future misuse.
