On Friday, the police officer who assassinated Daunte Wright testified in emotional testimony at a manslaughter trial in the United States. The suburban Minneapolis cop stated that she had no intention of using deadly force that day. Kimberly Potter is facing first and second-degree manslaughter charges in the April 11 killing near Minneapolis, Minnesota. She claimed she saw another officer’s fearful expression before firing.
When queried by the prosecutor, the officer, Kim Potter, broke down and mumbled, at times, “I didn’t want to hurt anybody,” and finally, “I’m sorry it happened.” “I remember yelling, ‘Taser, Taser, Taser,’ and nothing happened, and then he told me I shot him,” Potter testified in front of a US courtroom on Friday. When Daunte Wright pulled away from the officers and was getting back into his car, the 49-year-old cop said she intended to use a Taser to restrain him, but accidentally shot him once with her handgun.

Not only that, but the cop acknowledged that she would not have halted his car if she hadn’t been educating another officer. Potter was the ultimate witness before the defence rested its case. According to the cop, she shot Wright during a commotion on April 11 at Brooklyn Center. She and other officers were on their way to arrest him for a weapons violation on an outstanding warrant. Prosecutors claim Potter was an experienced officer who had received Taser and deadly force training. Her actions were illogical.
Meanwhile, the attorneys for the resigned police officer claim that she made a mistake. However, if she had intended to use deadly force, she could have been justified in doing so. Because another officer was also in danger by Wright’s car. The killing brought renewed attention to police violence against Black people in the US. Leading to protests and more calls for reforms.
