Authorities uncover shocking hoarding situation in New York City apartment
In a disturbing case of alleged animal hoarding and neglect, authorities rescued 48 Belgian Malinois dogs from a cramped, one-bedroom apartment in Queens, New York. Authorities discovered the animals confined in squalid, inhumane conditions without sunlight or outdoor space, prompting swift legal action and renewed calls for stronger animal protection measures.
NYPD discovers “beyond comprehension” conditions
Responders found a hoarding situation “beyond comprehension,” as the owner had crammed dogs into kitchen drawers, closets, cages, and every available corner of the home.
According to officials, the canines ranged in age from young puppies to mature adults, all exhibiting signs of extreme fear and poor socialization. Rescuers spent two days carefully removing the animals and transporting them to care facilities across the city.
Criminal charges filed against the dog owner
Detectives from the NYPD’s Animal Cruelty Squad took Yadgarov into custody. He now faces 96 misdemeanor charges for animal neglect and failing to provide proper sustenance. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz publicly outlined the severity of the charges and described the appalling conditions in which officials found the dogs.
“The defendant is accused of keeping dozens of dogs in unsanitary and deplorable conditions, unable to move freely and surrounded by filth. Animals are voiceless and vulnerable and deserve to be treated with basic care and decency,” Ms. Katz said.
Three dogs had to be euthanized
Three dogs were reportedly so sick that veterinarians had to euthanize them. Shelter staff are now providing medical care and nourishment to the remaining animals, preparing them for adoption.
Yadgarov allegedly told investigators he had planned to surrender the dogs voluntarily. However, he vanished following his eviction, only to be later located and arrested. If convicted, he could face up to one year in jail.
Animal rights advocates call for awareness and reform
The incident has reignited debate over the need for more proactive intervention in animal hoarding cases and stronger legal protections for pets.
“This rescue operation is a stark reminder of the need to address and prevent animal cruelty in New York City,” said ASPCA President and CEO Matt Bershadker.
He added, “These Belgian Malinois mixes, who represent only a fraction of the animal lives saved through our partnership with the NYPD, are finally receiving the love and care they deserve. We look forward to witnessing their journey to new homes where they will be free to experience life as a beloved pet, likely for the first time.”
The case remains under investigation, and advocacy groups have reiterated the importance of community vigilance in reporting suspected abuse or hoarding.
