Alabama Priest Accused of Paying 17-Year-Old Stripper $273,000 to Stay Silent

Quick Summary

Alabama priest Robert Sullivan is accused of beginning a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old stripper in 2009, paying her $273,000 for an NDA, and continuing financial support until 2025. The diocese has launched a Church investigation, though state authorities declined to open a criminal case. The allegations have been sent to the Vatican.

A 61-year-old Catholic priest in Alabama is under investigation after allegations surfaced that he began a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old stripper in 2009 and paid her hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep quiet.

Robert Sullivan, pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Homewood, has been placed on leave after his accuser, Heather Jones, now 33, went public with her claims. According to The Guardian, Jones met Sullivan while performing at a strip club he regularly attended.

What are the allegations against Robert Sullivan?

Jones alleges that during one of Sullivan’s visits to the club, he tipped her and then offered $273,000 for a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) in exchange for what she described as an “ongoing relationship” involving financial support and private companionship, including sex.

Days later, she claims, two wire transfers of $136,500 each were sent to her from an attorney’s office.

Jones says Sullivan, initially presenting himself as a doctor, took her to restaurants, hotels, and shopping trips in at least six cities across Alabama. She alleges their relationship continued until earlier this year.

Financial transactions and ongoing support claims

Jones provided further details, saying the priest:

  • Bought her a mobile phone.
  • Paid for her addiction rehab treatment.
  • Transferred nearly $120,000 to her via Venmo between July 2024 and March 2025.

She stated that she decided to go public because of Sullivan’s ongoing work with families and children at his parish.

“Others may be vulnerable to the same type of manipulation and exploitation,” Jones told The Guardian.

Who is Robert Sullivan?

Sullivan has served as a priest for more than 32 years and previously served six years as president of John Carroll High School.

His long-standing position in the diocese and leadership roles have brought heightened scrutiny to the allegations.

Diocese and law enforcement response

Bishop Steven Raica of the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham addressed the accusations in a letter this week, stating that both the Alabama Department of Human Resources and law enforcement determined the claims did not meet the criteria for a criminal investigation.

However, Raica said the diocese has launched its own investigation under Church law and diocesan guidelines.

“Our diocesan Victim Assistance Coordinator has continued to be in contact with the woman who brought forth the allegations and has provided appropriate support,” Raica wrote, adding that the matter has also been reported to the Vatican.

Why the case is complex

This case raises legal and ethical complexities:

  • Age of consent laws: In Alabama, the age of consent is 16, but power dynamics and the alleged offer of hush money could introduce other potential civil or Church law violations.
  • Church disciplinary action: Even without criminal charges, priests can face removal from ministry under Canon Law for misconduct.
  • Public trust issues: Allegations involving minors — even historic ones — can severely impact the credibility of religious institutions.

Larger context: abuse scandals in the Catholic Church

While Sullivan’s case is still under investigation, it comes against the backdrop of decades of abuse scandals that have eroded trust in the Catholic Church worldwide.

  • The US Conference of Catholic Bishops reported more than 2,700 new allegations of abuse in 2023 alone, most from decades earlier.
  • The Vatican has faced increasing pressure to take swifter action, even in cases where civil authorities decline to prosecute.

What happens next?

Sullivan remains on administrative leave while the diocesan inquiry proceeds. Depending on its findings, possible outcomes include:

  • Removal from active ministry.
  • Referral to the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
  • Possible civil litigation from Jones if she chooses to pursue damages.
