A video published by Field Ethos, a media outlet founded by Trump Jr., shows him shooting ducks in a conservation area near Venice, including the rare Ruddy Shelduck, a species protected under European and Italian law.
Italian officials condemn Trump Jr.’s actions
Andrea Zanoni, an Italian environmentalist and politician, strongly criticized Trump Jr.’s actions, calling the killing of a protected bird a crime. According to Zanoni, Trump Jr. did not possess a valid hunting license and was operating within a conservation zone safeguarded by the European Union’s Birds Directive.
Zanoni has since filed a formal complaint with the judiciary, asserting that “Veneto and Italy are not the property of the USA.” Luana Zanella, a member of the Italian Parliament, has taken the matter further by requesting an official response from the Environment Ministry regarding the incident.
Video evidence raises legal concerns
The video, reportedly filmed in the Pierimpie Valley south of Venice, captures Trump Jr. firing from a pit blind while surrounded by deceased birds, including the Ruddy Shelduck. The footage has prompted widespread condemnation, with Monica Sambo of the Democratic Party of Venice stating, “Protected species are being killed in the Venice lagoon, an environment that should be safeguarded.”
Renewed debate over hunting regulations
The controversy has reignited discussions about hunting laws and conservation efforts in Italy. Environmental activists and lawmakers have called for legal action against Trump Jr. for his involvement in the unauthorized hunting of a protected species.
This is not the first time Trump Jr. has been embroiled in hunting-related disputes. In 2019, he faced criticism for killing a rare Argali mountain sheep in Mongolia without securing the necessary permits. Additionally, he has drawn backlash for using Field Ethos to promote trophy hunting.
