A strange, triangular aircraft spotted in the skies near Area 51 has reignited long-running speculation about what, exactly, flies out of America’s most secretive military base.
The sighting comes courtesy of Anders Otteson, an off-grid videographer who documents the remote desert regions surrounding the Nevada installation for his YouTube channel Uncanny Expeditions. While filming in the early hours of Jan. 14, Otteson captured footage of what he describes as a distinctly triangle-shaped craft—one that looked different from any aircraft he had seen before.
Was it a classified test flight? A familiar stealth bomber playing tricks on the eye? Or something else entirely?
What Was Seen Over Area 51?
Otteson was in the desert around 3 a.m. when he noticed an unfamiliar silhouette moving through restricted airspace.

According to Otteson, the aircraft appeared to have:
- An equilateral triangle shape
- A flat trailing edge, unlike most known aircraft
- No visible wings
- A jagged or irregular rear section
Earlier that same night, Otteson had filmed a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, which gave him a point of comparison. While the B-2 has a V-shaped flying-wing profile, he said the mystery craft looked noticeably different.
Still, he was careful not to overstate the case.
“Given the limited resolution, I wouldn’t rule out that it’s a B-2 or another military aircraft,” Otteson said. “But I certainly think we have something interesting here.”
Why the Shape Matters
Triangular or “Dorito-shaped” aircraft have been a recurring feature in UFO and UAP reports for decades—but rarely with clear footage near a known testing ground.
Otteson noted similarities between his video and:
- 2014 photos taken over Wichita, Kansas, and Amarillo, Texas, which appeared to show an unacknowledged triangular aircraft
- Recent reports from Southern California’s remote desert regions describe similar shapes
None of those sightings has been conclusively linked to a known Air Force platform.
The B-2 Question: Familiar Aircraft or Something New?
The B-2 Spirit, one of the most secretive bombers ever built, routinely operates out of classified or semi-classified airspace. Its unusual flying-wing design has fueled UFO speculation since the 1980s.
However, aviation experts often point out key differences:
- The B-2 has a smooth trailing edge, not a jagged one
- Its wingspan is extremely wide relative to its length
- Its flight profile is well documented, even if its missions are not
That doesn’t rule out the possibility of a next-generation stealth platform—or a test variant—being flown out of Area 51, which has historically been used to develop aircraft years before public acknowledgment.
Odd Radio Chatter Adds to the Mystery
The intrigue deepened the following day.
On Jan. 15, Otteson connected with longtime UFO researcher Joerg Arnu, who shared scanner audio allegedly recorded over Area 51’s unencrypted radio channels hours before the sighting.
The transmissions reportedly included unusual, snack-themed phrases such as:
- “Profile Michelob”
- “Imperial with garlic”
- “Pretzel snack”
- “Fridge hydrate”
Arnu, who has monitored military radio traffic for decades, described the chatter as “different than anything” he had previously heard.
That said, Otteson himself urged caution, noting that:
- Military pilots often use coded or playful jargon
- The phrases could be routine call signs or mission shorthand
- There is no direct evidence linking the radio chatter to the triangular aircraft
Triangular UAPs: A Broader Pattern
According to the National UFO Reporting Center, Nevada logged more than 40 reports of triangular unidentified aerial phenomena in 2025 alone.
Triangular sightings are among the most common UAP shapes reported worldwide, often described as:
- Silent or near-silent
- Slow-moving
- Dark or featureless
- Flying at low altitude
Skeptics argue many of these reports can be explained by:
- Military aircraft
- Drones
- Optical illusions
- Misidentified stars or satellites

Area 51 remained officially secret until 2013, despite decades of public speculation. Even after its acknowledgment, details about what happens inside remain scarce.
