Former YouTuber EDP445, whose legal name is Bryant Moreland, is in custody in Las Vegas on four felony charges from Kern County, California. The case stems from a 2021 online sting in Bakersfield. Prosecutors say a documentary interview he gave this year revived it.

The Kern County District Attorney’s Office filed the complaint on Monday, November 2. Las Vegas police helped arrest him on Wednesday, November 4, according to the office’s statement reported by KBAK/KBFX Eyewitness News.

The charges are accusations. Moreland has not entered a plea. He is presumed innocent unless prosecutors prove the case in court.

Prosecutors filed four felony counts

According to the DA’s office, the four felonies are:

  • attempting to commit lewd acts upon a child
  • meeting a minor for lewd purposes
  • contacting a minor with intent to commit a sexual offense
  • distributing or showing pornography to a minor

The office says all four relate to an alleged incident on April 17, 2021, “involving a child under the age of 14.”

TMZ said it obtained the court documents. It listed the same first three counts and described the fourth as sending content with intent to seduce a minor.

The DA’s announcement names him as Bryant Turhanemmerson Moreland. He must be returned to Kern County before he appears in court. The office said it will schedule an arraignment after his extradition.

No coverage we found named a defense attorney. Moreland had not commented publicly as of Thursday.

A 2021 sting that never produced charges

EDP445 built a following of more than a million with rants about the Philadelphia Eagles, according to The Bakersfield Californian. In April 2021, online creators ran a sting on him. A YouTuber messaged him while posing as a 13-year-old girl. They then confronted him on camera at an apartment complex in Bakersfield.

The person he was messaging was an adult, not a child, KBAK reported in August. The confrontation video spread widely, and Moreland lost his place on the major social platforms, the Californian reported. No one charged him over it.

The DA’s office says it reviewed the incident in 2021 and 2022 and faced “significant challenges in pursuing prosecution.” It blamed “the lack of cooperation from the reporting parties.”

In August it told KBAK it had asked for more information in January 2022, and that information never came back. The Kern County Sheriff’s Office said then that investigators had not received enough evidence or cooperation from the people involved.

That history explains why this week’s charges took so long. An online sting is not a police operation.

By the DA’s own account, it could not prosecute without help from the people who ran it. What prosecutors lacked, they now say they found in Moreland’s own words.

What changed was his own interview

That new material came from The Sick Mind of EDP445, a documentary by filmmaker Mike Clum. It has passed 7.4 million views on YouTube, according to the Californian. Its proceeds go to RAINN, the anti-sexual violence organization, KBAK reported.

The film includes an interview with Chris Hansen, the former host of To Catch a Predator. KBAK reported this exchange from it.

Hansen asks, “You were trying to have sex with a 13-year-old girl?” Moreland answers, “For the most part, yep.”

In August, the DA’s office told KBAK it was “re-examining the case in light of the statements made by the suspect in the documentary.” The office and the Sheriff’s Office reopened the investigation.

The office now says the complaint followed “an extensive investigation” into those statements. It says the evidence met the threshold for charges.

DA spokesperson Daniela Gonzaga told the Californian that the two agencies had been working the case for a long time. She said the office could not file earlier because the people who reported it would not cooperate.

Hansen has said that Moreland’s admissions in their interview were enough for prosecutors to get a warrant, TMZ reported. The DA’s office has not described the warrant.

Clum told the Californian he set out to make something entertaining. He did not expect government officials to watch it. Michael Pariente, a defense lawyer interviewed in the film, called Moreland’s decision to take part a bad idea, the paper reported.

The questions the court will have to settle

A statement on camera is not a conviction. A court will decide what the interview can prove. It will also rule on whether his words in a produced film are admissible.

The DA’s office has not released the complaint itself. So the exact Penal Code sections, and the evidence behind each count, are not yet public.

Timing is another open point. When KBAK asked in August whether the statute of limitations could affect a prosecution, the DA’s office did not answer. The office has not addressed it publicly since filing.

The case also adds to a run of criminal cases against online personalities this fall. In Massachusetts, the looksmaxxing streamer Clavicular pleaded not guilty in October to charges involving a 17-year-old. In Minnesota, prosecutors charged James O’Keefe over hidden-camera videos he filmed and posted himself.

Extradition comes first, then an arraignment

Moreland is in custody in Nevada and faces extradition to Kern County. Hansen said in a video posted on X that he expected extradition “in the next few weeks,” Sportskeeda reported. No court has announced a hearing date.

Once he is back in California, a judge in Kern County Superior Court will arraign him on the complaint. That hearing is where he would enter a plea. We will update this story when the arraignment date is set or when Moreland or his lawyer responds.
