'TEMPTING': What Did Elon Musk Say to Trump’s Deportation Threat?

Elon Musk issued a brief but loaded 14-word response after President Donald Trump hinted at launching a federal crackdown—or even deportation—against him.

“So tempting to escalate this. So, so tempting. But I will refrain for now,”
Musk posted on his social platform X, responding to a video of Trump threatening “DOGE action” if the Tesla and SpaceX CEO didn’t align with his stance on the controversial spending bill.

Trump, in a fiery Truth Social post and later at a press event, accused Musk of being the “largest subsidy recipient in U.S. history” and suggested that without government support, the billionaire “would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa.”

That wasn’t all.

Before boarding Marine One, Trump quipped:

“We might have to put DOGE on Elon… DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon.”

Though vague, “DOGE” is being interpreted as a threat involving regulatory bodies or a revived enforcement initiative tied to government spending audits. And Musk’s measured reply? It reveals he’s not backing down—just holding fire.

Why Is Trump Targeting Musk Over Subsidies?

At the center of this escalating feud is a major tax and spending bill dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill.” The legislation includes provisions to boost electric vehicle (EV) mandates and fund green energy projects, policies Trump has long opposed.

Musk, despite running Tesla—an EV company—has also criticized the bill, calling it irresponsible and inflationary. In fact, Musk said he would form a new political party if the bill passes and pledged to support challengers against Republicans who back it.

“I am literally saying CUT IT ALL,” Musk posted, adding that both major parties are “addicted” to debt.

Trump’s counterpoint? That Musk has personally benefited from billions in federal incentives and subsidies, including those for EVs, rockets, and satellites.

The Bannon Factor: Why Musk Brought Up Prison

In an unexpected twist, Musk also took aim at former White House strategist Steve Bannon, stating that he’ll be “going back to prison soon.” That jab came shortly after Bannon—who’s currently appealing a contempt of Congress conviction—called for Musk to be deported and have SpaceX seized.

“Deport Elon Musk,” Bannon said on his “War Room” podcast. “He’s a parasitic illegal alien.”

Bannon’s comments and Trump’s threats appear to have pushed Musk to the brink. But his choice to pause escalation suggests a calculated strategy.

This feud isn’t just personal—it’s ideological. It pits a billionaire technocrat with libertarian leanings against populist conservatives who now question the tech elite’s power and patriotism.

What Is “DOGE” and Is It a Real Threat?

Trump’s cryptic “DOGE” threat has caused confusion. While some joked about the Dogecoin meme cryptocurrency, political insiders suggest it could refer to a planned agency or effort called the “Department of Government Efficiency.”

The implication? That Trump could use the federal bureaucracy to investigate or punish Musk’s companies if he regains power.

A few possibilities include:

  • Pulling federal contracts for SpaceX (used by NASA and the Department of Defense)
  • Investigating subsidy usage at Tesla
  • Launching IRS or SEC probes into Musk’s companies or personal taxes

So far, there’s no official entity named DOGE, but Trump’s circle has floated similar proposals before.

Could Elon Musk Be Deported?

Trump didn’t explicitly call for deportation but said, “We’ll have to take a look” when asked by reporters.

For the record, Musk is a naturalized U.S. citizen. That means deportation isn’t legally feasible without major criminal charges—none of which Musk is facing.

But Trump’s rhetoric, amplified by allies like Bannon, taps into nativist resentment and casts Musk as both an ungrateful immigrant and a taxpayer liability—a narrative that plays well with segments of his base.

TL;DR

  • Elon Musk posted a 14-word reply to Trump’s threats: “So tempting to escalate this… but I will refrain.”
  • Trump suggested Musk would need to “go back to South Africa” if subsidies were revoked.
  • Musk slammed the tax bill, Bannon, and said a new party may emerge.
  • Bannon urged Musk’s deportation and seizure of SpaceX.
