Fact-check: Is Elon Musk really buying McDonald’s and CNN?

Rumors debunked as satirical content resurfaces following Trump’s election win

Claims that Elon Musk is acquiring McDonald’s and CNN have gone viral in the wake of Donald Trump’s return to the White House. According to social media chatter, Musk allegedly plans to “fix the media” by buying CNN and to enter the fast-food business by acquiring McDonald’s. However, these sensational claims are rooted in satirical content and lack any factual basis.

Viral rumors spark online frenzy

Social media posts have widely circulated a narrator’s claim that “Musk has officially announced: ‘I am officially buying McDonald’s.’” Meanwhile, another rumor suggests Musk is set to acquire CNN for $3 billion as part of a broader Republican agenda to reshape media narratives.

The rumors have gained traction due to Musk’s prominent role as a Republican donor and his newly announced position in President-elect Trump’s administration.

The truth behind the claims

Despite the buzz, neither Musk nor representatives from McDonald’s or CNN have confirmed these acquisitions. The claims have been debunked as satire. For instance, the CNN purchase rumor originated from Gridiron Glory, a self-labeled satirical account. Additionally, the McDonald’s acquisition rumor appears to be a recycled exaggeration stemming from Musk’s 2022 tweet joking that he’d eat a Happy Meal on TV if McDonald’s accepted Dogecoin as payment.

Meta has flagged several of these posts as false under its ongoing efforts to combat misinformation.

Trump, Musk, and DOGE

While the acquisition claims are baseless, Elon Musk’s involvement in the Trump administration is very real. President-elect Trump recently announced that Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy would lead the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Trump described the duo as “wonderful Americans” tasked with dismantling bureaucracy and reducing wasteful expenditures.

Responding to the appointment, Musk tweeted, “Unlike you, neither of us are being paid, so it is very efficient indeed. DOGE will do great things for the American people. Let history be the judge.”

The broader context

Speculation surrounding Musk’s activities has grown in recent weeks, partly fueled by his substantial donations to Republican campaigns and his vocal criticism of legacy media outlets. However, as of now, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO’s focus appears firmly set on his new government role rather than acquisitions of fast-food giants or media networks.

While the rumors may entertain social media audiences, they remain just that—rumors. For now, it seems Musk’s plate is already full with his responsibilities leading DOGE alongside Ramaswamy and his ongoing commitments to Tesla, SpaceX, and other ventures.
