Georgia Man Convicted in Brutal Double Murder, Left 8-Year-Old Child With Deceased Victims

Quick Summary

William Jerome Adams, 29, was convicted of fatally shooting his girlfriend and her teenage son in March 2021, then leaving an 8-year-old child alone in the house with their bodies for days. He attempted to flee to Mexico but was arrested at the border. Adams has been sentenced to two life terms without parole.

What happened in the Georgia double murder case?

A Georgia man has been convicted of a brutal double murder that took place in 2021, involving the fatal shooting of his girlfriend and her teenage son. Shockingly, he left the couple’s 8-year-old child alone in the home with the victims’ bodies for nearly two days before anyone discovered the crime.

The accused, 29-year-old William Jerome Adams, has been sentenced to two consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole, according to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office.

The victims were identified as Mary Lindsay, the suspect’s girlfriend, and her 15-year-old son, Muhammad Jr.

How were the victims discovered?

The events unfolded on March 26, 2021, when a concerned friend of Mary Lindsay hadn’t heard from her in several days. That friend asked Lindsay’s daughter to check on the family. Upon arriving at the home, the daughter reportedly climbed through a window and made a horrifying discovery: her 8-year-old brother, Atif Muhammad, was sleeping in their mother’s bedroom, unaware or unable to grasp the tragedy that had occurred.

In a separate locked room, the daughter found the bodies of her mother and older brother. She immediately alerted authorities.

According to PEOPLE Magazine, police determined the victims had been deceased for at least 48 hours by the time they were found.

What did the investigation reveal?

1. Evidence at the crime scene

Investigators recovered three 9mm shell casings from the room where the victims were found. A warrant for Adams’ arrest was issued shortly thereafter.

2. Attempted escape

Less than 24 hours later, Adams was apprehended by authorities in Laredo, Texas, near the U.S.-Mexico border. He was reportedly using a false identity and lacked proper documentation, including a passport. He was also found to have withdrawn $2,000 from Lindsay’s bank account shortly after the killings.

3. Firearm history and domestic abuse

Testimony revealed that 10 days prior to the murders, Muhammad Jr. and his twin sister had discovered a 9mm firearm in their mother’s bedroom. They had even taken a picture of it. When they asked their mother about the weapon, she said it belonged to Adams.

In court, prosecutors described Adams as controlling and abusive. As part of the evidence, the jury was shown an email that Mary Lindsay had sent to herself containing a photograph of an injury to her arm—allegedly inflicted by Adams.

What did the court say?

District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson said in a statement following the conviction:

“The verdict and sentence are fitting for a defendant who violently took the life of a mother and son and stole from them. We mourn with the victims’ family and hope that the outcome of the trial gives them some closure and justice.”

The court found Adams guilty of two counts of murder, and the judge sentenced him to two consecutive life sentences without parole, reflecting the gravity of his crimes.

Why does this case matter?

This case brings attention to several pressing issues:

  • Domestic violence warning signs: Lindsay had documented evidence of past abuse but was still living with the man who would later kill her.
  • Child endangerment: The trauma inflicted on the surviving 8-year-old, left alone with the corpses of his mother and brother, is unimaginable.
  • Law enforcement alertness: Swift police action and cross-border coordination likely prevented Adams from escaping justice.

What happens next?

Adams will spend the rest of his life in prison. As for the surviving children and the rest of Lindsay’s family, the conviction may offer some sense of closure, but the emotional scars will likely last far longer than the legal proceedings.

This case will continue to be referenced in conversations about domestic violence intervention, mental health support for child survivors, and justice system responsiveness.
