Father dies after rescuing struggling children from ocean
In a heartbreaking Father’s Day tragedy, a 33-year-old Florida father drowned after heroically rushing into the ocean to save his two children from distress. Antwon Wilson of Lauderhill was spending time with his family at a Fort Lauderdale beach when the incident unfolded Sunday evening.
According to authorities, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue (FLFR) received multiple 911 calls around 7:20 p.m. reporting a possible drowning near the B Ocean Resort. Ocean Rescue Lifeguards had already left their posts for the day, but emergency responders quickly mobilized.
“They were able to turn their trucks around and be the first responders from our fire rescue department,” Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Daniel Moran told WFLA.
A father’s final act of bravery
Witnesses say Wilson sprang into action when he noticed his daughters struggling in the water. One child was caught in dangerous currents, prompting him to jump in without hesitation.
“The father made it to the daughter and was able to keep her afloat until lifeguards were able to get in and pull the daughter out,” Moran said.
Nearby beachgoer Eslam Saad also leaped into the water to assist, later recounting the harrowing moment to 7News Miami:
“I didn’t think about anything. I didn’t even tell my wife I’m going in the water again. I just jumped into the water.”
Saad managed to reach one of the girls, reassuring her as he brought her closer to shore: “When I got close to her, I told her, ‘Please, I know you are in panic. Please, do not do anything crazy, I will try my best to get you out.'”
Tragic outcome after rescue efforts
Despite the successful rescue of the children, Wilson disappeared beneath the waves. Rescue teams located him minutes later and performed emergency CPR on the beach before transporting him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Community mourns a selfless hero
Heartfelt tributes flooded social media as friends, family, and colleagues paid tribute to Wilson’s memory. Childhood friend Andrew Toussaint shared an emotional farewell:
“To my childhood friend—thank you for the laughter, the memories, and the pieces of my heart you carried with you. I don’t understand why you had to go, but I trust that God always has the answer.”
His employer, Martha Taxes and Financial Services, released a statement praising Wilson’s character:
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Antwon Wilson, a highly esteemed member of our team… [We] extend sincerest condolences to his family.”
The incident serves as a devastating reminder of both the dangers of unguarded beaches and the extraordinary sacrifices parents make for their children.
