Incident unfolded during a flight from Orlando to Hagerstown

A Maryland woman is facing serious domestic child abuse charges after allegedly assaulting a boy mid-flight, slamming his head into the airplane window, and striking him with a water bottle — all in response to comments he made about her weight.

Kristy Crampton, 46, was arrested after a Memorial Day flight from Orlando, Florida, to Hagerstown, Maryland, according to an arrest report obtained by CBS News. She had reportedly been returning from a trip to Disney World with the boy, whose relationship to her has not been publicly disclosed by authorities.

“Miss Piggy” insult sparked violent outburst, report says

According to the police report, Crampton told investigators that tensions flared during an argument with the boy after he called her “fat” and referred to her as “Miss Piggy.” She admitted to taking away his phone, which allegedly prompted him to accuse her of taking up too much space and to push her arm off the shared armrest.

Enraged, Crampton reportedly “smacked him with her fist and then a water bottle… and ‘slammed’ his head into the airplane window,” the report stated.

Witnesses onboard were alarmed by the outburst. One passenger told police, “She was not correcting the child, she was abusing him, whipping the s**t out of the kid.”

Crampton was charged, released on bond

Law enforcement took Crampton into custody upon arrival at the airport. She was later released on a $10,000 bond and now faces multiple charges: second-degree child abuse, second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment.

The boy’s condition has not been publicly disclosed.

Surge in in-flight violence raises alarms

The disturbing incident is part of a broader uptick in unruly passenger behaviour aboard commercial flights. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), 637 such incidents have been reported so far this year. While that number peaked in 2021 at nearly 6,000 cases, the FAA still recorded an average of 1.6 unruly incidents per 10,000 flights just last week.

Over Memorial Day weekend alone, another passenger experiencing a mental health crisis attempted to open the emergency exit on a Houston-bound flight, forcing a diversion to Seattle. And last year, a Southwest Airlines passenger was caught on video yelling, “Shut that baby up,” after a child wouldn’t stop crying.

With growing concern over in-flight safety, authorities continue to urge stricter enforcement and harsher penalties for violent or disruptive behaviour in the skies.
