Meet Babydog: Bulldog steals the show at the Republican National Convention

As the Republican National Convention unfolds in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, featuring appearances from Donald Trump, JD Vance, and other conservative icons, an unlikely star has stolen the spotlight—a chubby bulldog named Babydog.

Babydog goes viral

Babydog, the beloved pet of West Virginia Governor Jim Justice, has captured the internet’s heart with her laid-back demeanor during her owner’s speech. Lounging on a black leather armchair, the English Bulldog appeared perfectly at ease before an audience of hundreds of politicians.

Governor Justice, a major speaker at the convention, made sure to mention his furry friend. “Babydog has got a prediction for everybody here. Babydog says that we will retain the House, the majority in the House, we are going to flip the United States Senate, and overwhelmingly we are going to elect Donald J. Trump and JD Vance in November,” Justice declared, attributing Babydog’s confidence to the belief that “we’re worth it.”

Indiana Congressman Jim Banks also highlighted Babydog in his remarks, stating, “I don’t know about you, but thank God Babydog is a Republican.”

A beloved mascot

Born in 2019, Babydog quickly became a fan favorite, frequently appearing in briefings during the COVID-19 pandemic. Governor Justice even used the slogan “Do It for Babydog” to promote a vaccination lottery in West Virginia. She is also featured on a mural at the state capitol.

Crowd’s favorite

According to The New York Times, Babydog’s appearance at this year’s RNC was met with an enthusiasm typically reserved for former President Donald J. Trump. As she was brought onstage, the crowd chanted, “Babydog! Babydog!”

Governor Justice also owns two Boston Terriers, Lucy and Ellie, making Babydog part of a trio. The West Virginia Governor’s website notes, “Whether it be special appearances on the biggest of stages, like the Governor’s State of the State address, or simply meeting people and shaking paws in her travels, Babydog always makes everyone smile everywhere that she and the Governor go.”

Babydog’s viral presence at the convention highlights her unique role in bringing a touch of warmth and charm to the political stage.
