Woman charged with murder after deadly attack on firefighter-paramedic
A Missouri woman has been charged with murder after allegedly stabbing a Kansas City firefighter-paramedic who was attempting to help her during an ambulance ride, authorities announced Sunday.
The Clay County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that 38-year-old Shanetta Bossell faces charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the death of 29-year-old Graham Hoffman, a firefighter-paramedic with the Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD).
If convicted, Bossell could face life imprisonment. She remains in custody on a $1 million bond, according to KCTV reports.
Disturbance on highway leads to deadly encounter
The Kansas City Police Department stated that just after 12:30 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to reports of a woman—later identified as Bossell—walking along 152 Highway near North Oak Trafficway. Concerned callers alerted authorities about her safety.
Police located Bossell and called for emergency medical services. Around 1:25 a.m., while en route to Saint Luke’s Hospital, Bossell allegedly attacked Hoffman inside the ambulance, fatally stabbing him.
First responders said the ambulance was quickly stopped on 152 Highway near Platte Purchase Road, where officers and additional firefighters detained Bossell. A knife was recovered from the scene.
Hoffman succumbs to injuries despite emergency efforts
Hoffman was rushed to the intensive care unit at North Kansas City Hospital. Despite immediate medical attention, KCFD confirmed that the knife wound pierced his heart, and he later succumbed to his injuries. Hoffman had served with the Kansas City Fire Department since 2022.
“Graham was a vibrant individual who loved life and loved serving his community,” said KCFD Fire Chief Ross Grundyson. “He was an excellent paramedic. He treated his patients with the highest level of skill and compassion.”
City leaders mourn tragic loss of young first responder
Kansas City officials gathered Sunday afternoon to address the tragedy and express condolences to Hoffman’s family and colleagues.
“Graham was 29 years old, someone who had an exceptional life ahead of him, and he died doing something that was so impactful and important to all of us, serving the community,” said Mayor Quinton Lucas. “Today, I’m focused on grieving for his mother, his father, his sibling, his family and everyone in the KCFD family.”
City leaders pledged their support for the Hoffman family as they prepare funeral arrangements. Grief counseling services will also be made available to fire department personnel.
“There are a lot of things that have happened since I became mayor a few years ago,” Lucas added. “I never expected a line-of-duty death like this one. I never expected a violent criminal incident to bring this amount of pain to a community and family.”
Authorities revealed that Bossell had been arrested just days earlier for allegedly assaulting a Platte City police officer during a separate incident. She was charged with assault and resisting arrest, and released after posting a $10,000 bond.
Following the fatal stabbing, Mayor Lucas acknowledged concerns regarding Bossell’s recent release.
“Like many, I share concern that the defendant had within the past week been arrested and charged by prosecutors with felony assault on a law enforcement officer only to, based upon the allegations, return as a serious threat to the public and first responders only days later,” Lucas said in a statement.
He added, “I believe in our justice system and will await further information about all that led to this heartbreaking incident and all that could have been done to avoid it.”
Discussions are ongoing between city officials and first responders to review current policies and improve protections for emergency personnel moving forward.
