New COVID-19 variant XEC spreads across Europe and US: Symptoms and recommendations

Emergence of XEC Variant

A new COVID-19 variant, XEC, is causing alarm in Europe, having been first detected in Germany in June. This strain, a combination of two Omicron variants, KS.1.1 and KP.3.3, is now present in over a dozen countries.

Implications for the United States

Medical experts warn that the XEC variant may soon dominate in the United States. They urge the public to get booster shots and vaccinations to bolster immunity. The UK government has already announced free booster shots for those at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

Impact on European nations

Countries like Denmark and Germany are experiencing significant impacts due to the XEC variant. Covid data analyst Mike Honey highlighted on X, “Recombinant variant XEC is continuing to spread, and looks a likely next challenger against the now-dominant DeFLuQE variants (KP.3.1.1.). Here are the leading countries reporting XEC. Strong growth in Denmark and Germany (16-17%), also the UK and Netherlands (11-13%).”

Despite the spread, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reassures that mutations among viruses are typical.

Symptoms and recommendations

The symptoms of the XEC variant are similar to those of previous cold or flu illnesses, including fever, sore throat, cough, body aches, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Recovery may take weeks for some individuals.

Vaccination remains a key defense against the XEC variant, as it stems from the Omicron lineage. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises maintaining good hygiene and improving access to clean air. Scientists continue to call for more research to better understand the XEC variant’s symptoms and implications.
