Authorities uncover body weighing 272 kg amid garbage, vermin, and signs of hoarding; house declared a health hazard
New Orleans, LA — A chilling case has emerged from New Orleans, where a woman was found to have lived for nine months with the mummified body of her deceased son inside a home overwhelmed by filth and hoarding. The woman, identified as Barbara Hainsworth, a reportedly “mentally disabled elderly woman,” is now under investigation by local authorities.
Disturbing scene sparks outrage and investigation
The discovery was made on Thursday, May 15, after numerous complaints from neighbors prompted action by the New Orleans Health Department. Officials from the city’s Code Enforcement division arrived at the residence following mounting concerns about its unsanitary state. What they uncovered inside was described as nothing short of horrific.
“A Code Enforcement investigator was immediately dispatched to the property. DCE’s investigation revealed horrific conditions, including the remains of a mummified male body and evidence of extreme hoarding conditions, along with mounds of trash in and around the property,” the department said in an official statement.
The body, which reportedly weighed 272 kilograms, was found amid heaps of garbage and animal waste in a home infested with rats and other vermin. Investigators described the conditions as unlivable, raising alarms about how long the property had gone unchecked.
Former doctor lived with son’s corpse for months
When questioned by police, Hainsworth calmly told officers that the body belonged to her son, who had “died about nine months ago.” Authorities have yet to publicly release the son’s name, but indicated that he had suffered from multiple medical conditions prior to his death.
Records show that Hainsworth is a former physician whose medical license was revoked roughly a decade ago. Officials have not confirmed whether mental health issues played a role in her failure to report her son’s death or in the extreme hoarding behavior observed at the residence.
Home labeled a public health hazard, but demolition paused
City officials have declared the house a serious health hazard. Code Enforcement has fined Hainsworth $6,125 for the deteriorating conditions and unsanitary environment. Despite the severity of the case, the city has opted not to demolish the property immediately.
Instead, the Department of Code Enforcement (DCE) has ordered a full structural assessment and cleanup operation. “DCE informed its demolition contractor to be on standby to assess to clean up, and remove the trash and seal the hole in the bathroom floor. The property was also scheduled to be boarded by the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD),” the city stated.
Community demands accountability
The case has raised serious questions about the city’s ability to track and intervene in cases involving vulnerable residents. Residents say the property had long been a concern, with repeated complaints made about odors and unsanitary conditions. Some expressed frustration that it took nearly a year and a death for the city to act decisively.
As the investigation continues, the New Orleans Police Department has not yet announced whether criminal charges will be filed. Meanwhile, city officials are coordinating with mental health professionals and social services to evaluate Hainsworth’s condition and determine next steps.
