NJ Transit Service Resumes After Crash Halts Buses at Port Authority Terminal

What happened at the Port Authority Bus Terminal?

Commuters in and around New York City faced a chaotic Wednesday morning after a crash involving three NJ Transit buses temporarily disrupted operations at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. The incident occurred around 6:15 a.m. on July 2, 2025, at one of the terminal’s critical access points—the express bus lane ramp in Midtown Manhattan.

Initial reports from NJ Transit suggested that the entire terminal had shut down. However, the Port Authority later clarified that while the terminal itself remained open, NJ Transit bus service was the only segment impacted by the crash.

By 10 a.m., the situation had stabilized. The ramp reopened, and NJ Transit service in and out of the terminal resumed, albeit with delays.

How many people were injured in the NJ Transit bus crash?

Twelve people sustained minor injuries in the collision, according to officials on the scene. One individual required hospitalization for further evaluation. While the injuries were reportedly non-life-threatening, the crash served as a wake-up call about the fragility of public transit infrastructure in high-traffic urban hubs.

The identities of those injured have not been released, in line with privacy protocols. There’s no word yet on whether any of the bus drivers involved were among those injured.

What caused the NJ Transit bus crash?

At the time of publication, the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities are looking into whether driver error, mechanical failure, or other contributing factors led to the three-bus collision during peak commuter hours.

Given that the crash occurred on an express ramp used to expedite bus traffic into the Port Authority, the investigation may also examine ramp conditions, traffic management protocols, and any recent maintenance history.

The NYPD and Port Authority Police are reportedly collaborating on the inquiry. Updates are expected later this week.

Suggested source: Consider citing the New Jersey Transit Police Department for future statements or investigation updates.

Why does this incident matter to commuters?

The Port Authority Bus Terminal is one of the busiest in the country, handling over 200,000 passengers daily. A disruption—even for a few hours—can ripple across regional commuting patterns, affecting not just New Jersey riders but also those from Pennsylvania, upstate New York, and Connecticut.

Here’s why it matters:

  • Disruption to work schedules: Early-morning commuters were stranded or rerouted, likely missing work or appointments.
  • Emergency preparedness questions: A three-bus crash raises concerns about how quickly the system can recover from future incidents.
  • Pressure on infrastructure: The event highlights the strain on aging transit systems, particularly at high-volume entry points like Port Authority.

How did NJ Transit and Port Authority respond?

The communication between NJ Transit and the Port Authority highlighted a recurring challenge: messaging clarity during emergencies. Initially, NJ Transit reported that the terminal was shut down entirely, which created confusion among riders. The Port Authority later clarified that the building had remained operational throughout the incident.

Despite the mix-up, NJ Transit was able to resume service within four hours, and updates were provided to the public via social media and the NJ Transit app. Still, the lag in consistent information left some commuters frustrated.

This miscommunication raises broader concerns about crisis communication and coordination between agencies—a critical component in any densely populated transit system.

What should commuters expect next?

While service has resumed, NJ Transit warns that residual delays may continue through the day. Commuters are advised to:

  • Check real-time updates via the NJ Transit app or website
  • Allow extra travel time through the Port Authority terminal
  • Use alternate transit options like PATH trains or ferries if possible

In the coming days, the investigation may prompt procedural changes or safety audits of bus lanes and terminals. It’s also likely that city officials and transit watchdog groups will use this event to push for better safeguards and emergency protocols.

A crash involving three NJ Transit buses at New York’s Port Authority Bus Terminal disrupted service early Wednesday morning, injuring 12 people and halting traffic on the express bus ramp. While service resumed by 10 a.m., the cause of the collision remains under investigation. The incident highlights vulnerabilities in transit infrastructure and crisis communication.
