Can middle school students really design life-changing technology?

It might sound like a stretch, but a group of seventh graders at Valley Catholic Middle School in Beaverton, Oregon, just proved it’s possible. In a project that mixed heart, science, and sustainability, the students designed prototype prosthetics for a paralyzed puppy—all using recycled materials.

Their assignment? Help Ember, a 16-week-old labradoodle with a spinal injury, regain mobility. It wasn’t just a class project—it was their final exam in the school’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) curriculum. And the results are worth a closer look, both for their innovation and their potential impact.

Who is Ember, and why did she need prosthetics?

Ember is a young labradoodle who suffered a spinal injury that left her back legs paralyzed. At just four months old, her world became limited. That’s where the students came in—not with sympathy, but with problem-solving.

While Ember wasn’t physically in the classroom, she was very much part of the students’ daily work. Using measurements and photos, they created mock-ups with the aim of giving her a second chance at walking.

What was the project’s goal—and how did the students approach it?

STEM teacher Susan Fu framed the project around a real-world application. “The goal is to challenge students to apply their knowledge to a real-world scenario,” she told local news station KATU-TV.

The assignment had clear constraints:

  • Use only recycled materials.
  • Design a prototype that could theoretically support Ember’s weight and movement.
  • Test it on a stuffed animal with similar proportions.

The result was a wide array of creative models, each reflecting a student team’s unique approach to biomechanics and materials engineering. Some models resembled small wheelchairs. Others leaned toward exoskeleton-style frames. What they all shared was thoughtful design and iterative testing.

Why recycled materials?

This wasn’t just about engineering—it was also about sustainability. By requiring students to use only recycled materials, the project added another layer of complexity. It also delivered a strong lesson: innovation doesn’t have to start with brand-new resources.

Cardboard, plastic bottles, old toy wheels, Velcro straps—these were the building blocks. One group repurposed parts from a broken vacuum cleaner. Another used pool noodles for padding and support. The students learned firsthand that constraint breeds creativity.

Could any of these designs actually help Ember walk?

Possibly. While the classroom work ended with scaled-down tests on stuffed animals, the school says that some of the more promising designs may be 3D printed at full size for Ember to try in real life.

This is where the project moves beyond just education. With 3D printing, designs can be rapidly prototyped and customized for Ember’s size, weight, and mobility needs. If even one of the designs proves successful, Ember could become mobile again—with help from a group of 12-year-olds.

Why does this kind of project matter?

There are a few reasons why this project stands out:

  • Hands-on education with real-world impact: Instead of learning engineering principles in the abstract, students saw their work potentially improve a living creature’s life.
  • Focus on empathy-driven innovation: Ember wasn’t just a case study. She was a real dog with a real challenge, which added emotional investment to the technical task.
  • Sustainability integration: Requiring the use of recycled materials encouraged resourcefulness and emphasized environmental responsibility.

These kinds of projects do more than teach engineering—they teach problem-solving, teamwork, and ethics. They show students that science and compassion can go hand in hand.

What’s next for the students and Ember?

As of now, Ember is still using traditional mobility support, but with the potential 3D-printed prosthetics, her future could change. If even one of the student-designed models works, it might lead to more collaboration between schools, veterinarians, and prosthetics designers.

Meanwhile, the students have taken away something just as valuable: the knowledge that their ideas—no matter how young or seemingly simple—can make a real difference.

“This gave our students a chance to think critically, prototype creatively, and care deeply,” said Susan Fu. “That’s the future of STEM.
