Two Pennsylvania State Troopers are in critical condition after a violent confrontation on Interstate 81 in Franklin County that left a suspect dead. The shooting occurred on Wednesday evening following a pursuit that began after a reported theft at a local Dick’s Sporting Goods store.

What triggered the police shooting in Franklin County?

According to a statement from the Pennsylvania State Police, officers were responding to a retail theft reported at approximately 6:11 p.m. at a Dick’s Sporting Goods location in Franklin County. When they arrived, the suspects—two women and one man—fled the scene in a vehicle.

The pursuit led police onto Interstate 81, a major highway running through the region. Authorities deployed a spike strip that successfully disabled the suspect vehicle at Exit 3. As troopers approached the stopped vehicle, two female suspects exited and complied with police commands.

But a third suspect, described as a male, pulled out a firearm and opened fire on the officers, wounding two of them. The troopers returned fire, fatally shooting the suspect on the scene.

What is the condition of the injured troopers?

The two wounded state troopers were immediately transported to WellSpan York Hospital, where they remain in critical condition, according to authorities.

The Pennsylvania State Troopers Association (PSTA) issued a statement following the incident. PSTA President Stephen Polishan asked the public to join in prayer for the troopers and their families, emphasizing the daily risks that officers face.

“Each day our troopers go to work prepared to give their last full measure. We can never thank them enough for their incredible bravery,” Polishan said.

Has the threat to the public been contained?

Pennsylvania State Police confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public. However, they described the scene in southern Franklin County—about 135 kilometers (85 miles) northwest of Baltimore—as still “very active” due to the ongoing investigation.

Officials have urged the public to avoid the area surrounding Exit 3 on I-81 while forensic teams and investigators continue their work at the scene.

How have public officials responded?

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro responded to the news in a post on X (formerly Twitter), expressing support and concern for the troopers.

“Pennsylvania’s law enforcement officers are the very best of us — running towards danger every day to keep our communities safe. My wife and I are praying for the two troopers injured in Franklin County,” Shapiro wrote.

Local leaders and state law enforcement officials have echoed the governor’s message, emphasizing the dangers of frontline policing and the importance of community support for injured officers.

What happens next in the investigation?

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the troopers or the deceased suspect. Investigators are working to piece together the events leading up to the shooting, including reviewing dash cam and body camera footage, interviewing witnesses, and processing the crime scene.

The two female suspects who complied with police are reportedly in custody. It is not yet clear what charges they may face or whether they were directly involved in the shooting or just in the initial theft.

The Pennsylvania State Police and state attorney general’s office are expected to lead a joint investigation into the use of force and the broader circumstances of the incident.

The bigger picture: A reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face

This shooting is the latest in a string of incidents nationwide that have highlighted the dangers law enforcement officers face during routine calls that can escalate in a matter of seconds.

Retail thefts are often considered nonviolent crimes. But as this case illustrates, police officers must always be prepared for situations to turn deadly, even when responding to seemingly low-level offenses.

This also raises renewed questions about protocol during vehicle stops, especially when suspects are believed to be armed or dangerous. Interstate pursuits introduce additional hazards for both officers and the public, and this incident will likely spark renewed calls for reviewing chase policies across state departments.
