Watch: Pentagon Chief and Japan’s Defense Minister Do Push-Ups, Lift Weights Ahead of Bilateral Talks

Pentagon Chief and Japan’s Defense Minister Do Push-Ups, Lift Weights Ahead of Bilateral Talks

Before the handshakes, briefing books, and closed-door diplomacy, the cameras captured something unusual: push-ups, rowing machines, and weights. In Washington this week, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and visiting Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi kicked off their day with a joint workout, an image that quickly went viral and sparked both praise and mockery online.

The spectacle was lighthearted on the surface. But in the context of tightening US–Japan defense ties and rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific, the message was deliberate: the alliance is active, visible, and meant to project unity.

Why did the US and Japan defense chiefs work out together?

The workout took place at Joint Base Myer–Henderson Hall, alongside US Army soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Regiment, known as the Old Guard. According to officials, it preceded formal bilateral talks at the Pentagon.

A choreographed moment, not a coincidence

For seasoned observers of defense diplomacy, the scene fit a familiar pattern.

Public-facing gestures often accompany alliance meetings to signal trust and camaraderie. Physical training underscores military values such as endurance, readiness, and mutual respect. In an era of viral diplomacy, optics matter as much as communiqués.

Koizumi later described the session as very tough, posting on X that American-style military training pushed him to his limits, though he maintained a smile throughout.

What does the “joint exercise” say about the US–Japan alliance?

The workout may have been informal, but the context was anything but.

Reinforcing an unshaken partnership

Following the exercise, Hegseth and Koizumi held their fourth meeting since Koizumi assumed office in October 2025. Both sides reiterated that the alliance remains solid and unwavering despite regional instability.

They committed to expanding joint military drills, boosting cooperation on missile defense and co-production, and strengthening supply chains for critical minerals, an increasingly urgent issue as both nations seek to reduce reliance on China.

Why are China and North Korea central to these talks?

Nearly every substantive point of the Pentagon discussions traced back to shared concerns about Beijing and Pyongyang.

China’s military expansion and its activities around Taiwan and the East China Sea remain a central concern for both Washington and Tokyo. North Korea’s continued missile tests and nuclear ambitions are also driving closer coordination on missile defense systems.

Hegseth, an Army National Guard veteran, has emphasized readiness in the Indo-Pacific. Supporters frame this as deterrence, while critics see it as escalation.

How has Pete Hegseth’s “warrior ethos” been received?

Hegseth’s leadership style has generated sharp reactions.

Supporters argue that visible toughness boosts morale within the armed forces, reinforces deterrence, and helps build trust with allies. Critics counter that the workout was performative, distracted from domestic political challenges, and leaned too heavily on optics over policy substance.

Some online users mocked Hegseth’s exercise form, while others dismissed the moment as staged male bonding meant for the cameras and social media.

What was Shinjiro Koizumi’s US itinerary?

The Washington stop was part of a broader week-long visit aimed at deepening defense cooperation.

Koizumi spoke at the Honolulu Defense Forum in Hawaii, met US Indo-Pacific Command chief Admiral Samuel Paparo, visited a drone technology company in Los Angeles, and attended a reception marking the 15th anniversary of Operation Tomodachi, the joint relief mission after Japan’s 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

The visit also sets the stage for Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s planned trip to the United States in March.

Why does this moment matter beyond the viral clip?

It would be easy to dismiss the workout as a gimmick, but that risks missing the strategic intent behind it.

In modern diplomacy, images travel faster than policy documents. A viral clip can reach audiences untouched by official statements, and allies and adversaries alike read meaning into these signals. The workout framed the US–Japan alliance as synchronized and forward-moving, both literally and politically.

TL;DR

Pete Hegseth and Shinjiro Koizumi held a joint workout ahead of Pentagon talks, creating a viral moment that symbolized alliance unity. While critics mocked the display as performative, the optics reinforced deeper cooperation on military drills, missile defense, and supply chains amid shared concerns about China and North Korea.
