Russian Couple Arrested After Empire State Building Marriage Proposal Stunt: What Happened?

A dramatic marriage proposal atop the iconic Empire State Building has landed a Russian couple in legal trouble after they allegedly climbed the skyscraper’s spire without safety equipment, unfurled a peace banner, and got engaged more than 1,400 feet above New York City.

The stunt, carried out by Ivan Kuznetsov and Angelina Nikolau, quickly went viral on social media, drawing comparisons to scenes from an action movie. But authorities say the climb was far from romantic, charging the pair with multiple offenses after a rescue operation involving dozens of police officers.

What happened during the Empire State Building proposal?

According to authorities, Ivan Kuznetsov and Angelina Nikolau accessed the restricted spire of the Empire State Building, climbing to the structure’s highest point at approximately 1,454 feet above Manhattan.

Once at the top, the couple unfurled a banner reading:

“When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.”

Moments later, Kuznetsov proposed to Nikolau while the two balanced atop the skyscraper without visible safety equipment.

The pair reportedly remained on the spire for nearly 10 minutes before police officers reached them.

How did authorities respond?

The unauthorized climb prompted a significant emergency response from the New York Police Department (NYPD).

According to reports, nearly 40 officers were involved in responding to the incident. Police body camera footage later showed an officer climbing a ladder to reach the couple.

As he approached them, the officer asked, “How are you doing?” before adding, “Well, you can’t be up here.”

The footage underscored both the danger of the situation and the challenges first responders faced while safely bringing the couple down.

What charges does the couple face?

After being escorted down, Kuznetsov and Nikolau were arrested.

Authorities charged them with multiple offenses, including:

  • Burglary
  • Reckless endangerment
  • Additional offenses related to unlawful entry and the unauthorized climb

Officials have not publicly explained how the couple managed to access the restricted antenna area, which is located well above the building’s public observation decks.

The investigation into how security was bypassed is expected to continue.

Why is the stunt considered so dangerous?

Although the proposal captured attention online, safety experts note that rooftopping carries serious risks.

Climbing skyscrapers without protective equipment can expose participants to:

  • Fatal falls
  • Strong winds at high elevations
  • Structural hazards
  • Risks to emergency responders attempting rescues

Beyond personal danger, such incidents often require large-scale emergency responses that divert police and rescue resources.

What did the Empire State Building say?

An Empire State Building spokesperson described the climb as an “unauthorized incident.”

The spokesperson also noted that couples wishing to propose at the landmark can instead book the building’s official “Happily Ever Empire Proposal Package,” a premium experience that reportedly costs $1,000.

The remark highlighted the contrast between sanctioned proposals at one of New York City’s most famous landmarks and the illegal climb that ultimately resulted in criminal charges.

Who are Ivan Kuznetsov and Angelina Nikolau?

The couple is no stranger to high-risk urban climbing.

They are widely recognized within the “rooftopping” community, an activity in which participants climb tall buildings or structures without safety gear, often filming the experience for social media.

Their adventures have taken them to skyscrapers and landmarks around the world, including:

  • Tianjin, China
  • Los Angeles
  • Other major international cities

Their social media content has attracted millions of views by showcasing extreme heights and breathtaking cityscapes.

What is Skywalkers: A Love Story?

Kuznetsov and Nikolau were featured in the 2024 Netflix documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story.

The film follows the couple’s relationship alongside their passion for rooftopping, portraying the risks they take to capture extraordinary footage from some of the world’s tallest structures.

Netflix describes them as daredevil influencers who risk “their romance, freedom and lives” while attempting increasingly dangerous climbs.

The Empire State Building proposal appears to be another example of the type of high-risk stunt that made the pair internationally known.

Why has the incident gone viral?

Several factors fueled widespread online attention:

  • A marriage proposal atop one of the world’s most recognizable skyscrapers
  • The dramatic rescue by NYPD officers
  • The peace message displayed from the spire
  • The couple’s existing social media following
  • Their appearance in a popular Netflix documentary

Videos and photos of the climb quickly circulated across X and other social media platforms, prompting debate over whether the act should be viewed as romantic, reckless, or both.

The bigger picture

The Empire State Building proposal is the latest reminder of the growing intersection between social media fame and extreme-risk content.

While rooftopping continues to attract audiences fascinated by breathtaking urban views, authorities consistently warn that these stunts endanger not only participants but also emergency responders and bystanders.

For Kuznetsov and Nikolau, what began as a headline-grabbing proposal has now become a criminal case that could carry significant legal consequences.

TL;DR

  • Russian couple Ivan Kuznetsov and Angelina Nikolau allegedly climbed the Empire State Building’s spire without authorization.
  • The pair reached the 1,454-foot-high antenna and remained there for nearly 10 minutes.
  • They displayed a peace banner before Kuznetsov proposed to Nikolau.
  • Both were arrested and charged with burglary, reckless endangerment, and other offenses.
  • The couple is well known for “rooftopping” and previously appeared in Netflix’s Skywalkers: A Love Story.
