Who Was Sarah Carroll? Michigan College Student Killed by Ex-Boyfriend in Murder-Suicide

A 20-year-old Michigan college student, described by her family as “smart, brave, and strong,” was fatally shot by her ex-boyfriend in what police have confirmed as a murder-suicide. Sarah Carroll, who was pursuing her dream of becoming a physician assistant, was killed on Saturday, August 30, at the Woodland Villa Apartments near Detroit.

The tragedy has left her family, friends, and community devastated—and has reignited calls to address stalking, intimate partner violence, and the gaps in protection for young women.

What Happened to Sarah Carroll?

Westland Police say Carroll’s ex-boyfriend, identified only as Lincoln, shot her multiple times with a shotgun before calling 911 to report the killing. He then turned the weapon on himself.

Carroll had reportedly ended the relationship months earlier after nearly a year together. Her mother, Jennifer, told Click on Detroit that Lincoln had been stalking Sarah for two months and that her daughter was in the process of seeking a personal protection order (PPO) against him.

“She was with Lincoln, her ex-boyfriend, for almost a year and they were having trouble,” Jennifer said. “He was stalking her for the past two months. And he came here last night, shot her, called 911, said he killed his girlfriend, and then shot himself.”

Who Was Sarah Carroll?

Carroll was a student at Schoolcraft College, working toward a degree to become a physician assistant. Her parents, James and Jennifer, said she was dedicated to her studies, deeply loved by her peers, and someone who “lit up every room she entered.”

A GoFundMe campaign launched on behalf of her family describes Sarah as “only just beginning her journey” and seeks support for her funeral expenses.

“She was loved by everybody. Everybody she met,” James said. “She was wonderful. I’m going to miss my baby.”

A Family’s Grief—and a Warning

In emotional statements, Sarah’s parents reflected not only on their loss but also on what might have prevented it.

  • Jennifer admitted that Sarah hadn’t told them she was being stalked. She urged other parents to pay closer attention to their children’s relationships: “To other parents – watch your kids. Try to get more into their life, try to get them to be open and talk to you.”
  • James said Lincoln had been suffering from mental illness, stressing the need for families to take such struggles seriously: “If their children are suffering from mental illness, get them some help. Get them the help that they need before something like this happens.”

The Broader Issue: Stalking and Intimate Partner Violence

Carroll’s killing is part of a troubling pattern. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV):

  • Nearly 1 in 3 women in the U.S. experience physical violence from an intimate partner.
  • Stalking is reported by 19.3 million women in their lifetimes.
  • Access to firearms in abusive relationships increases the risk of homicide by 500%.

Advocates say the case highlights the urgent need for faster enforcement of protective orders, stronger stalking laws, and better access to victim support services.

Tributes Pour In

Friends, classmates, and relatives flooded social media with messages honoring Sarah’s memory.

  • Her cousin Ann Quinlan remembered her as “beautiful, sweet, and smart.”
  • Childhood friend Aaliyah Wright wrote: “She was so funny… she was everything any girl would ever want to be… I am devastated and genuinely angry that my friends and family keep becoming victims of violence. Absolutely nobody deserves this, and it needs to stop.”
  • Her father, James, posted on Facebook after a vigil: “I just want to take a moment to thank all of my family and friends who showed up for the vigil tonight and those that couldn’t be there but were there in spirit… Your love and generosity are extremely appreciated in our time of need.”

Jennifer’s own words captured the family’s heartbreak: “My poor sweet girl is gone. I’m so broken and in shock. Forever 20.”

What Comes Next

As the Carroll family grieves, they hope Sarah’s death serves as a wake-up call for other families and communities to take stalking and harassment seriously before they escalate.

For those experiencing similar situations, experts recommend reaching out to:

  • National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) – available 24/7 for crisis support.
  • Local law enforcement for immediate threats.
  • Campus safety offices and victim advocacy groups for students.

TL;DR

  • Sarah Carroll, 20, a Michigan college student, was killed by her ex-boyfriend Lincoln in a murder-suicide.
  • She had been stalked and harassed for months and was seeking a protection order.
  • Her parents described her as loving, ambitious, and determined to become a physician assistant.
  • The case highlights the dangers of stalking, the link between intimate partner violence and firearms, and the need for stronger protections.
  • Friends, family, and her community are mourning her as tributes pour in.
