Scientists question accuracy of famous groundhog's weather forecasts

Punxsutawney Phil’s accuracy questioned ahead of Groundhog Day

Every year on February 2, thousands gather in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness a centuries-old tradition—Punxsutawney Phil, the world’s most famous groundhog, predicts whether winter will last another six weeks or if spring will arrive early.

However, scientists and meteorologists are increasingly skeptical of Phil’s weather forecasting abilities.

A tradition with questionable accuracy

The Groundhog Day tradition dates back to 1887, based on Pennsylvania Dutch folklore:

  • If Phil sees his shadow, he retreats into his burrow, signaling six more weeks of winter.
  • If no shadow appears, spring is expected to come early.

While this quirky custom is beloved, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has analyzed Phil’s predictions and found that he has been correct only 35% of the time.

This places him at a lowly 17th among weather-predicting rodents.

A more reliable rodent?

Interestingly, Staten Island Chuck, a groundhog based in New York, holds an impressive 85% accuracy rate, making him a more reliable forecaster than Phil.

Despite this, Punxsutawney Phil remains the most famous groundhog, thanks in part to the 1993 film “Groundhog Day”, starring Bill Murray, which cemented the tradition in popular culture.

Will Phil get it right this year?

As Phil prepares for his annual forecast this Sunday, meteorologists caution that his predictions should not be taken seriously.

For those who truly want to know whether winter will linger, official weather agencies and climate models remain the best bet—but that won’t stop thousands from celebrating Groundhog Day in Pennsylvania!
