Iconic ocean liner departs Philadelphia for transformation off Florida’s Gulf Coast
The historic SS United States, once a marvel of American engineering, has embarked on its final journey from Philadelphia’s Delaware River waterfront. The legendary 1,000-foot ocean liner, which set a transatlantic speed record on its maiden voyage in 1952, is being towed to Mobile, Alabama, for preparations before it is eventually sunk off Florida’s Gulf Coast to become the world’s largest artificial reef.
A new purpose beneath the waves
Okaloosa County officials in Florida plan to turn the decommissioned vessel into a thriving artificial reef, adding to the region’s 500+ underwater structures. The site is expected to become a major diving attraction, contributing millions to the local economy through tourism, scuba diving, and fishing charters.
Originally scheduled to move in November, the relocation was delayed due to stability concerns raised by the US Coast Guard. However, after resolving a longstanding rent dispute and securing necessary approvals, the vessel finally set sail for its transformation.
A storied past
The SS United States was once the pride of American maritime innovation. It shattered the transatlantic speed record by crossing the ocean in just three days, 10 hours, and 40 minutes—beating the RMS Queen Mary’s time by 10 hours. To this day, it remains the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic.
Designed for both commercial and military use, the vessel could transport thousands of troops when needed. However, after being decommissioned in 1969, the ship passed through various private owners, each attempting but failing to repurpose it due to high costs and logistical challenges.
A farewell to a legend
The entire process—cleaning, transporting, and submerging the vessel—is expected to take at least 18 months and could cost over $10 million. Despite its final fate beneath the sea, preservationists and maritime enthusiasts see this as a fitting tribute to the ship’s legacy.
“The ship will forever symbolize our nation’s strength, innovation, and resilience,” said Susan Gibbs, president of the SS United States Conservancy and granddaughter of its architect. “We wish her ‘fair winds and following seas’ as she embarks on this historic journey to her new home.”
Once a symbol of American dominance at sea, the SS United States will soon serve as a sanctuary for marine life, ensuring its legacy continues beneath the ocean’s surface.
