Trump-Putin Summit: For the first time in seven years, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet face-to-face this Friday in an effort to end the war in Ukraine. The high-stakes summit will take place at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska—a location chosen for both practical and symbolic reasons.
Alaska’s Shared History With Russia
Alaska’s ties to Russia date back to the 18th century, when it was a Russian colony. In 1867, Tsar Alexander II sold the territory to the United States for $7.2 million.
At the time, the sale was seen as a relief for Russia’s struggling economy, since Alaska’s remoteness made it costly to maintain. Putin was indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in 2023 and is subject to arrest in over 120 countries that recognize the court’s jurisdiction. The U.S., however, does not recognize ICC authority—making Alaska a legally safe location for the Russian leader.
This mirrors an earlier move by Washington to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who also faces an ICC warrant.
