Trump Says He Deserved Eight Nobel Peace Prizes, Attacks Norway After 2026 Snub

US President Donald Trump has criticized Norway after missing out on the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, claiming he deserved eight awards for conflicts he says he helped resolve. Speaking at a rally in Syracuse, New York, on Friday, October 9, Trump described the decision as a disgrace and questioned the recognition given to this year’s laureate, South African jurist Navi Pillay.

Trump said the United States, represented by him as president, should have received the honor. He also accused the prize’s decision-makers of political bias, declaring that the Nobel Peace Prize had been “forever discredited” by what he called a group of radical ideologues.

“We will not forget, Norway, that you didn’t give this prize,” Trump told the rally, adding that the decision was an “indelible stain” on the country.

The outburst came hours after the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced Pillay as the 2026 laureate for her work promoting peace and international law.

Trump claims he deserved eight Nobel Peace Prizes

Trump argued that his diplomatic record warranted multiple Nobel Peace Prizes, saying he should have received one for each of the eight conflicts he claims to have settled.

“We should have had eight Nobel Prizes for each war,” he said, insisting his administration achieved an exceptional record in international peacemaking.

However, fact-checkers have challenged the claim that Trump has settled eight wars. Some of the disputes included in his tally did not involve active wars, while other conflicts have not been conclusively resolved. Trump also acknowledged during his speech that he was still working to end the wars involving Iran and Russia and Ukraine.

His remarks therefore combine claims about previous diplomatic initiatives with promises to resolve ongoing conflicts. The outcomes and durability of the agreements he cites vary, making the broader assertion that eight wars have been settled a contested one.

Trump also claimed that his intervention had prevented a war between nuclear-armed neighbours India and Pakistan, saying he had saved 50 million lives. He has repeatedly taken credit for helping de-escalate tensions between the two countries. However, the specific figure of 50 million lives saved has not been independently established by evidence cited in the reporting on his remarks.

Trump questions Navi Pillay’s Nobel Peace Prize

Trump also aimed Pillay, dismissing her as a little-known figure associated with the United Nations.

“The Nobel Prize was given out today to a liberal person who works at the United Nations, who nobody has ever heard of,” Trump said. “I’ve never heard of the person, but congratulations anyway.”

Pillay, however, has had a long career in international law and human rights. Born in Durban, South Africa, in 1941, she grew up under apartheid and later became a prominent jurist. Her work included defending political prisoners during apartheid, serving as a judge at the International Criminal Court and leading the United Nations’ human rights office from 2008 to 2014.

She also chaired a UN commission that investigated alleged crimes in Gaza. The commission concluded that Israel was responsible for genocide in Gaza, a finding Israel has strongly rejected.

The Nobel Committee said Pillay’s career demonstrated a sustained commitment to international justice and legal accountability. Her recognition comes at a time when international courts and institutions are facing growing political pressure over their role in investigating alleged war crimes and other serious violations.

Trump says he stopped Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons

During the rally, Trump also claimed credit for preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and averting a wider regional catastrophe.

He said he had stopped Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and potentially threatening the Middle East, Europe and the United States. Trump further claimed that he had saved more lives than anyone in history.

These statements reflect his own account of his administration’s foreign policy record and should not be treated as independently verified assessments. Trump himself said he was still working to end the conflict involving Iran, alongside the Russia-Ukraine war.

His comments come amid continued controversy over his approach to Iran and the wider Middle East. His administration’s handling of the conflict has also drawn criticism, complicating his portrayal of his foreign policy record as one defined exclusively by peace agreements.

Why Trump has repeatedly sought the Nobel Peace Prize

Trump has made no secret of his desire to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and has repeatedly argued that his diplomatic initiatives deserve international recognition. He has also criticised former US President Barack Obama for receiving the award in 2009, during the first year of his presidency.

Four US presidents have received the Nobel Peace Prize: Theodore Roosevelt in 1906, Woodrow Wilson in 1919, Jimmy Carter in 2002 and Barack Obama in 2009.

Trump’s latest remarks continue a long-running grievance over being passed over for the honour. His criticism of the 2026 decision also follows his repeated public claims that his administration has resolved multiple international disputes.

The Nobel Peace Prize is not awarded directly by Norway’s government. The recipient is selected by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, a five-member body appointed by the Norwegian Parliament. The committee operates independently in deciding who receives the award.

What the Nobel decision means

The 2026 award recognises Pillay’s work in international law and human rights, rather than a single diplomatic agreement. The committee’s decision places particular emphasis on accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

Trump’s reaction has shifted attention from the laureate’s legal career to the president’s dispute with the Nobel selection process. His assertion that he deserved eight awards is also likely to keep his diplomatic record under scrutiny, particularly where claims of settled conflicts are disputed or where hostilities remain unresolved.

For now, Trump’s remarks underscore the gap between his view of his own achievements and the Nobel Committee’s assessment of the work it considers most deserving of the peace prize.
