Trump’s Praise for H-1B Visas Sparks Fury Among MAGA Supporters: “Betrayal of America First”

TL;DR

Former President Donald Trump’s defense of H-1B visas, a program that allows US companies to hire foreign professionals, has set off a firestorm among his MAGA base. Many of his core supporters, including prominent “America First” influencers, accused him of abandoning his anti-immigration stance and betraying the very movement that twice helped elect him.

Trump’s Comment That Started It All

During a recent Fox News interview with Laura Ingraham, Trump broke with his usual hardline rhetoric on immigration.

When Ingraham argued that the US has “plenty of domestic talent,” Trump countered bluntly:

“No, you don’t.”

He elaborated that H-1B visas are necessary to bring in specialized skills the US workforce lacks.

“You cannot simply take individuals from an unemployment line and declare, ‘I will place you in a factory, and we will manufacture missiles.’ It does not function that way,” Trump said.

The remarks signaled a significant departure from his “America First” platform, which has long focused on restricting both legal and illegal immigration in the name of protecting American jobs.

MAGA Movement Turns on Trump

Trump’s endorsement of the visa program, one he once vowed to tighten, sparked outrage among his loyal base on social media.

Savanah Hernandez, a conservative influencer and contributor to Turning Point USA, called the comments “disheartening.”

“Trump must step out of his bubble and return to the ground to listen to the American people who elected him,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “His H-1B comment illustrates how disconnected he has become from his base.”

An account named ChiefTrumpster, popular within MAGA circles, reposted the clip with the caption:

“Not good. We need to be prioritizing American students and workers; replacing us isn’t the answer!”

“This Is Catastrophic for Trump,” Says Conservative Commentator

Matt Morse, a conservative content creator who frequently promotes Trump’s policies, didn’t hold back.

“Whoever is advising Trump that we require an increase in H-1B visas, 50-year mortgages, and 600,000 Chinese students must be TERMINATED IMMEDIATELY,” he wrote on X. “AMERICA FIRST.”

In a follow-up post, Morse — who claims to reach tens of millions of viewers each month — added:

“I’m absolutely f****** beyond P***** OFF that tonight, as a justification for H-1B visas, Trump said Americans don’t ‘have talent.’ Absolutely unreal.”

Other right-wing commentators, like Evan Kilgore, went further.

“Donald Trump has betrayed the American people over some H-1B Indians,” Kilgore posted. “It’s so over.”

Why H-1B Visas Are a Political Flashpoint

The H-1B visa program allows US companies to hire skilled foreign professionals, particularly in technology and engineering. While tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon rely heavily on it, critics, including many in Trump’s base, argue it undercuts American wages and displaces local workers.

Trump’s administration had previously tightened visa scrutiny, citing worker protection, making his recent remarks appear contradictory.

A Strategic Shift or a Political Misstep?

Trump’s remarks may have been intended to appeal to business leaders and tech donors, but they risk alienating his populist voter base that fueled his rise.

Political analysts suggest the former president is trying to balance pro-business pragmatism with his anti-globalist messaging, a move that could prove risky ahead of 2026 political contests.

Still, his core supporters view any softening on immigration as a betrayal of “America First.” The backlash underscores a long-running tension within the Republican Party: economic nationalism vs. corporate globalism.

The Takeaway

Trump’s defense of the H-1B program highlights a potential fracture in his political coalition. While the former president insists that importing talent is necessary for national strength, his MAGA base sees it as an abandonment of American workers.

Whether Trump can reconcile these opposing views, or whether this controversy signals deeper unrest within his movement, remains to be seen.
