At Least 7 Dead, 11 Injured in UPS Plane Crash At Kentucky Airport

A Tragic Evening in Louisville

A UPS cargo plane burst into flames and crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday evening, killing at least seven people and leaving 11 others injured, according to officials.

The crash occurred around 5:15 p.m. local time, just a few miles from downtown Louisville. Witnesses reported hearing multiple explosions and seeing a trail of fire as the plane’s left wing caught fire before it slammed into the ground and exploded in a massive fireball.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear confirmed the casualties, describing the incident as “one of the darkest days the city has seen in years.”

The Flight and the Fiery Crash

The aircraft involved was a McDonnell Douglas MD-11, built in 1991 and operated by UPS Airlines. It had been scheduled to fly from UPS Worldport, the company’s massive air hub in Louisville, to Honolulu.

According to preliminary reports, three people were on board when the fire began in the aircraft’s left wing during takeoff. The plane appeared to lift slightly off the runway before crashing, triggering a fiery explosion that engulfed an area nearly “an entire city block,” said Louisville Fire Department Chief Brian O’Neill.

Video footage shared by residents showed a series of explosions and balls of flame erupting in rapid succession. Parts of a nearby building’s roof were blown apart by the impact.

Four of the seven victims were not on the aircraft, suggesting that the crash site may have struck structures or vehicles close to airport property.

Airport and UPS Operations Halted

Following the crash, Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport suspended all operations. Officials said flight activity is unlikely to resume before Wednesday morning as crews continue recovery efforts and assess damage.

The crash also forced UPS to temporarily shut down sorting operations at its Worldport facility, one of the largest logistics hubs in the world. The site employs thousands of workers, processes 300 daily flights, and sorts over 400,000 packages an hour.

UPS issued a brief statement Tuesday night:

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic event and are cooperating fully with authorities. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation. Our thoughts are with all those affected.”

Officials confirmed that the aircraft was not carrying hazardous materials.

Aviation Experts Weigh In

Aviation attorney Pablo Rojas said early video footage suggests a catastrophic engine fire may have triggered the disaster.

“Based on the flames visible near the left engine, it appears the aircraft was struggling to gain altitude,” Rojas said. “With that much jet fuel onboard, once a fire begins in the wing or engine area, it’s almost impossible to contain. The plane itself becomes like a bomb because of the sheer amount of fuel.”

He added that even if the pilot had detected the fire, there may have been no safe way to abort the takeoff.

“After reaching a certain speed, what pilots call V1, it’s no longer safe to stop. You have to take off or risk crashing into whatever’s beyond the runway,” Rojas explained. “This crew likely did everything they could to minimize casualties.”

Eyewitness Accounts and Aftermath

Residents living near the airport described hearing a deep rumbling followed by several loud booms. “The whole house shook,” said one witness. “When I ran outside, the sky was orange, you could feel the heat.”

Firefighters battled the blaze for more than two hours, eventually bringing it under control. Emergency crews later discovered multiple vehicles and structures damaged near the end of the runway.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims pending family notification. The NTSB and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are expected to begin a full investigation Won ednesday, including recovery of the black boxes that record flight data and cockpit voice communication.

A History of MD-11 Incidents

The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 model has a mixed safety record in the cargo industry. While widely used by carriers like UPS and FedEx, the aircraft’s complex handling characteristics have contributed to several high-profile accidents since the 1990s.

Notable past incidents include the UPS Flight 1354 crash in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2013, and a FedEx MD-11 accident in Tokyo in 2009. Investigations into both cases highlighted challenges related to aircraft weight and balance during takeoff and landing.

Experts say Tuesday’s disaster may prompt renewed scrutiny of the aging MD-11 fleet and its safety protocols.

What Happens Next

The NTSB will lead the investigation, working alongside the FAA and UPS technical teams. The process typically involves:

  • Recovering flight data recorders to analyze engine and instrument readings.
  • Interviewing air traffic controllers and witnesses.
  • Examining maintenance logs for potential mechanical failures.
  • Assessing pilot communication and procedural compliance.

Preliminary findings are expected within 30 days, though a final report could take up to a year.

Community Response

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg urged residents to avoid the area while emergency teams continue recovery efforts. “Our first responders are working tirelessly under incredibly difficult conditions,” he said.

Local churches and community centers have opened to provide counseling and support for those affected by the tragedy.

Flags at Kentucky state offices will be flown at half-staff through the weekend.
