As the strongest cyclone of 2025 tears through the Caribbean, a U.S. Air Force reconnaissance aircraft known as a “Hurricane Hunter” captured rare and chilling footage from inside the eye of Category 5 Hurricane Melissa. The storm, now threatening Jamaica with catastrophic winds and flooding, has already claimed at least seven lives across the region.

What happened when the US aircraft entered Hurricane Melissa?

The U.S. Air Force’s 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, famously called the Hurricane Hunters, flew directly into Hurricane Melissa early Monday morning to collect critical meteorological data for the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Shortly after sunrise, the aircraft entered the storm’s eye from the southeast. Video from inside shows a surreal “stadium effect,” thick gray clouds arching upward in a circular wall, surrounding a brief pocket of light in the middle.

From their vantage point, the crew described the moment on X (formerly Twitter):

“We are entering from the southeast just after sunrise, and the bright arc on the far northwest eye wall is the light just beginning to make it over the top from behind us.”

In another post, they noted, “Got a nice swirl of clouds going on,” referring to the dramatic rotation visible within the eye.

The footage also showed lightning flashes illuminating the eye wall, with waves below crashing in multiple directions — a haunting reminder of the storm’s immense energy. “The sea surface is always interesting to the eye, with waves going in different directions,” one pilot wrote.

How powerful is Hurricane Melissa?

According to the National Hurricane Center, Melissa is currently a Category 5 hurricane, with sustained winds exceeding 157 mph (252 km/h) — making it the strongest storm to form in the Atlantic this year.

Meteorologists describe Melissa as an “extremely dangerous and life-threatening system,” moving at a slow pace of 6–8 km/h. The sluggish movement increases the risk of prolonged rainfall, deadly storm surges, and extensive flooding across Jamaica and surrounding islands.

The storm is expected to bring:

  • Storm surges up to 13 feet (4 meters)
  • More than 40 inches (1,000 mm) of rainfall in certain regions
  • Winds strong enough to flatten coastal structures

If forecasts hold, Melissa could become the most powerful hurricane to make landfall in Jamaica since 1851, when modern records began.

Jamaica braces for catastrophic landfall

As of Monday night, Jamaica had activated over 800 emergency shelters and issued mandatory evacuation orders for residents in flood-prone and coastal areas.

Power outages were already spreading across the island, with over 50,000 homes losing electricity, as fierce outer bands lashed the coast. Prime Minister Andrew Holness urged citizens to move inland and avoid travel.

Emergency agencies are warning of:

  • Flash floods and landslides in mountainous terrain
  • Widespread infrastructure damage
  • Prolonged power and communication outages

At least seven people have been killed across the Caribbean so far, including in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, as Melissa’s outer bands caused flooding and storm-related accidents.


Why the Hurricane Hunters’ mission matters

Flying into a Category 5 hurricane is one of the most dangerous operations in aviation. The U.S. Air Force’s Hurricane Hunters are trained to withstand extreme turbulence and collect real-time weather data critical for saving lives.

By flying into Melissa’s core, they gathered:

  • Wind speed and pressure readings
  • Temperature and humidity profiles
  • Radar and satellite calibration data

This information helps meteorologists refine forecast models, improving accuracy for landfall predictions and evacuation orders.

The 53rd Squadron’s missions have been essential in recent years, helping track major storms like Hurricane Ian (2022) and Hurricane Lee (2023).

A look inside the eye: beauty amid destruction

Despite the destruction hurricanes cause, pilots often describe the eye of the storm as eerily calm and breathtakingly beautiful. The circular eye wall — made of towering thunderclouds, forms a massive “arena” that can stretch 20–40 miles across.
