In a stunning development that reads like a crime thriller, a Wisconsin man who orchestrated his disappearance has surfaced in a video message to police, confirming he’s alive months after an extensive search for his body in a local lake.
Video confirms survival
Ryan Borgwardt, 45, whose apparent drowning triggered a 54-day search operation, appeared in a brief selfie-style video sent to investigators. “Good evening, it’s Ryan Borgwardt,” he states in the 24-second clip, filmed against white apartment walls. “Today is 11 November. It’s approximately 10 am by you guys… I am safe, secure, no problem. I hope this works.”
Elaborate escape plot unveiled
The Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office revealed Thursday that Borgwardt’s August 12 disappearance was meticulously planned:
- Sank his kayak and mobile phone in the lake
- Used a child-sized boat to reach shore
- Escaped via a pre-positioned E-bike
- Cycled overnight to Madison
- Took a bus to Detroit
- Flew from Canada to an undisclosed location in Eastern Europe
“The great news is he’s still alive and well,” said Sheriff Mark Podell. “The bad news is that we don’t know where exactly Ryan is, and he has not decided to return home.”
Financial preparations
Investigators uncovered evidence of careful financial planning:
- $375,000 life insurance policy taken out before disappearance
- Funds transferred to foreign bank accounts
- New passport photographed
- Email address altered

Law enforcement response
