What is Donald Trump’s ‘Arc de Trump’? Inside the US President’s Grand Monument Plan for Washington, DC

In a move that blends patriotism with architectural ambition, US President Donald Trump has unveiled plans for a colossal new monument in Washington DC — the “Arc de Trump.” Inspired by Paris’s Arc de Triomphe, the proposed landmark would celebrate America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, marking a symbolic gateway into the capital.

What is the ‘Arc de Trump’?

Trump’s plan envisions a triumphal arch to stand at Memorial Circle, just beyond the Arlington Memorial Bridge and across from the Lincoln Memorial. The site, which connects Virginia to Washington, DC, is already a major ceremonial entry point, and Trump says it’s “been waiting for something grand.”

At a White House donor dinner this week, Trump showcased 3D models of the design, describing it as a tribute to America’s strength, unity, and founding spirit.

“It’s going to be really beautiful. I think it’s going to be fantastic,” Trump said, according to the BBC.

He revealed three proposed sizes, small, medium, and large, while joking that he preferred the biggest version. Holding up a scale model, he quipped, “There’s a rendering of what it will look like. You have three sizes. I happen to think the large one.”

The monument’s inspiration: A nod to Paris and American history

The Arc de Triomphe in Paris, built in the early 19th century under Napoleon Bonaparte, stands as one of Europe’s most recognizable monuments — a towering symbol of military pride and national unity.

Trump’s version, the Arc de Trump, is expected to carry similar patriotic symbolism, though adapted to American ideals. According to his remarks, the structure would commemorate the nation’s 250 years of independence and serve as a physical reminder of what he called “the enduring greatness of America.”

If completed, it would join other monumental landmarks on the National Mall, potentially reshaping the visual axis between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington Cemetery.

How will it be funded?

While Trump has not announced a detailed budget for the monument, he hinted that funds from another private initiative, a $250 million ballroom expansion project for the White House, might be redirected toward the arch.

“It’s fully taken care of now,” Trump reportedly told guests, according to the Associated Press, implying that leftover funds could cover construction costs.

It remains unclear whether the project will use federal funds, private donations, or a combination of both, though the President’s emphasis on private financing suggests an effort to avoid taxpayer backlash.

Why Memorial Circle?

The choice of Memorial Circle is deliberate. The circular park, at the eastern end of Arlington Memorial Bridge, sits at a symbolic crossroads between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.

Historians have often remarked that the site feels like an “unfinished gateway” to the capital, something Trump himself referenced in his remarks.

“Every time somebody rides over that beautiful bridge to the Lincoln Memorial, they literally say something is supposed to be here,” he said.

The monument’s placement would align visually with the National Mall’s grand axis, linking it to Washington’s larger neoclassical layout, originally envisioned by Pierre L’Enfant and later expanded through 20th-century memorial design.

What to expect from the design

Though final blueprints haven’t been released, early 3D models reportedly show:

  • A classical stone archway, modeled closely after Paris’s Arc de Triomphe.
  • Engraved panels featuring American founding symbols and historical quotes.
  • Potential inclusion of LED lighting for night-time illumination.
  • A reflecting plaza leading toward the bridge, creating a new ceremonial space for visitors.

If built at the proposed large scale, it could rise well over 100 feet, making it one of the most prominent new structures in the capital’s skyline.

Reactions and potential challenges

Public and expert reactions are mixed. Supporters view it as a bold patriotic statement in the run-up to the United States’ semiquincentennial celebrations in 2026. Critics, however, have questioned the project’s aesthetic fit, funding transparency, and political overtones, drawing comparisons to Trump’s prior interest in “classical American architecture” mandates.

Urban historians note that erecting a new monument on federal land in DC typically requires approval from several agencies, including the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) and the Commission of Fine Arts. Such a process could take months, if not years, depending on design revisions and environmental reviews.

Why it matters

Beyond architecture, the Arc de Trump symbolizes Trump’s ongoing efforts to leave a lasting mark on the nation’s capital, one rooted in grandeur and symbolism.

As America prepares for its 250th anniversary, the proposed monument could become a focal point of debate about how the nation remembers its past and defines patriotism in the modern era.

Whether it’s ultimately realized or remains a vision, the “Arc de Trump” reflects the President’s enduring belief in monumental gestures, both literal and political.

TL;DR

Donald Trump has proposed building an “Arc de Trump” monument in Washington DC to mark America’s 250th anniversary. Inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, it would stand at Memorial Circle and symbolize national strength and unity. Trump showed 3D models, favoring the largest version, and hinted that private funds could support its construction.
